Analysis of the masterpiece "SPRING DAY" ❄🌸: a very long thread;
I posted this again because I wasn't very satisfied with the earlier one.I included more info which I hadn't in the past. This is an absolute favorite song of mine which makes me all emotional.
I hope you like it😊
Many of us already know that Spring Day is a song about the Sewol Ferry Incident which occurred on the morning of 16th April,2014.💔 Spring day is such a song which has already assured and proved us that BTS are indeed the artists for healing.🌸🌸
Winter is often identified with darkness & coldness as the nights are longer than the days.According to psychoanalysis, snow is also symbolized as death(coldness of winter).Spring, which comes just after winter is a symbol of hope, warmth, happiness and beginning of a new phase.
The "SPRING DAY" MV makes a good use of the juxtaposition of individual scenes and group scenes of the members, representing both loneliness and hope that is reflected in the song.
In the 1st scene,Taehyung stands alone at a train station, putting his ear to the tracks to listen for an oncoming train. Shots of him in the snow showcases the emptiness of the station which also represents loneliness. This is similar to the film "INCEPTION" where +++
the main character ends his adventures in the world of dreama where the only solution is death.
In the next scene, Jungkook is alone on the train, the train being the symbol of the transformation of the human life. We can't predict where our journey of life will end but we can definitely go somewhere else. ++
With trains, we will move from one point to another which concludes understanding and receiving. This illustrates the journey of human life to find their identity.🚋🚉
In the very next scene, we see Jimin and the sea. According to Carl Jung, the sea is an aspect of the human subconscious that builds and shapes a person's character. Jimin being alone by the sea and looking at it indicates that he is aware of the aspects within himself.
Namjoon is also alone on the train. He is someone looking for his identity. Namjoon runs to the other carriage in the same direction as the train which indicated that he was going on the right direction but just like life,we will definitely stop by, someday! ++
Namjoon also stops by a place called "OMELAS". His scene transitions to a hotel with a large OMELAS sign referring OMELA as a temporary place that will eventually be left. The scene he steps out into shows snow on the ground as a reference to winter.
He walks past Yoongi and Hoseok and later on the train he walks past Jungkook's car without stopping as if it were a missed opportunity to reconnect as winter is yet to thaw.
THE STORY OF OMELAS:
"The Ones who Walk Away From Omela" tells us the story of a beautiful city filled with happiness that exists by the sea. It is a fictional utopia.Behind all the happiness in the Omelas, there's a little child who was sacrificed & locked up at the bottom of ++
a dark well under the city. No one is allowed to be kind to the miserable child who constantly suffers for Omelas to be perfect. If the little child is helped, the happiness of the city of Omelas will disappear. Most people wanted to help the child and were upset over ++
the injustice done.Eventually one of the two things happen: they learn to accept that there is nothing they can do for the child or they choose to leave. "OMELAS" plays the themes of suffering & happiness, individual & society, justice & freedom of decision, loss of innocence.
"SPRING DAY" appears on WINGS SUPPLEMENTARY STORY- YOU NEVER WALK ALONE. As an extension of the WINGS album, which deals with coming of age and loss of innocence.
In each of the cars, there is a suitcase. A suitcase is an analogy of the important things that are inherent in a person like thoughts, value of life, the problems faced and the reality.
In the scene where we see Namjoon going to the Omela, the story about an Utopia sociality. Hoseok and Yoongi represent the citizens of Omelas. Omelas is full of people and there's no place for the outsiders
(NO VACANCY)
The scene of Namjoon on the train is the same as the "Snowpiercer" movie. The film tells the story of a human who lived in a train, more precisely trapped because the earth is covered with snow & no human can survive outside the train. ++
Unfortunately, on the train, there's a division of castes- UPPER MIDDLE CLASS & LOWER MIDDLE CLASS. The social disparities are obvious. So, "NO VACANCY" basically is the carriage of the upper class. Namjoon being from the lower class is not allowed in the upper class.
But in the SPRING DAY MV, we see Namjoon entering the upper class.!!
How and what happened later!!??
Just like Curtis(Snowpiercer) gets attacked in the middle of the train,so does Namjoon.
Namjoon was pelted with cake. It seemed happy and joyful as if it were his birthday but it wasn't the case. The others, on seeing Namjoon coming inside couldn't accept it and started throwing things at him.Namjoon only wanted to ask for justice but instead he is the one on trial.
As mentioned earlier,Spring day also describes the "Sewol ferry incident" which occurred in South Korea. The ship carried high school students which sank one morning unnaturally.++
The victim was described as in the OMELA; a child who was locked up at the bottom of the well for the benefit of the crowd.
Seokjin is seen stuck at the bottom unable to go up while the other 6 members run to the top of the stairs depicting that he is a victim who died while others are the survivors who continue to grow up. This represents how the students and the families will never forget about ++
the incident and how they still think about the passed away every once and then.
In the next scene, we see Jungkook and the Carousels. Carousels are a metaphor for innocence of youth.
In the next few scenes, we see the members having fun and doing their everyday stuffs, but it reminds us that Carousels are a cycle with no edge. It continues to spin and is monotonous.
The scene also represents the survivors after the incident. They are playing and having fun together but they still feel the emptiness of loss.
The sensation of happiness o ly remains till we ride the Carousels but happiness is also temporary 🙂
In the next scene we see Seokjin stabbing something into Jimin's ears. It isn't an earring but a pin which is interpreted as a sign of solidarity with refugees. It is believed that people wearing pins are harmless.People wearing pins if treated badly, they know they aren't alone
In the next scene, the members didn't look happy although there were cakes, candles and fireworks. It seemed that they longed for something. There's only a single candle on the cake symbolising that 1 years has already passed since the incident took place.
Jimin finds the shoes (which is believed to be the victims') on the sea where the ship sank.
Seokjin and Laundry-
The washing machine is a metaphor for humans to erase all the painful memories.
There's a "DON'T FORGET" note on the machine. This means no matter how painful the past might be we mustn't forget it.
"Grownups are constantly telling us to forget and cheer up but we will remember and recollect our friends because not forgetting them is what we can do at best"
The mountain of clothes explains that human existence is the answer about destiny and death is inevitable. It can also be described as justice. Clothes have often divided us in groups so by removing them we will not be in caste because we are basically same.
In the next scene we see Hoseok, relieved and happy. He flies and plane and put his arms up un the air depicting freedom.
Jungkook ends up walking to the opposite direction of the Carousel which means that he is ready to leave behind his childhood happiness and move towards to grow up which is full of challenges and obstacles.
We see yellow ribbons behind Jungkook similar to those of the Sewol ferry campaign.
In South Korea, yellow ribbon is a symbol in memory of the victims and families of the deceased of the 2014 Sewol ferry incident.
Jungkook was seen chasing the streets that his hyungs had already passed. He wants to grow up now and learn from his hyungs and then they finally gathered together and walked towards the mature phase of life.
Jungkook wakes up realizing that they cant continue this path and seeks for justice just like Namjoon did. He runs to seek justice but stops thinking that he is alone but then the members appear being his inspiration to move forward.
TOGETHER.🌸
In the next scene Jungkook sees himself in the train which represents that even though justice has been accomplished, we can't return back to time. Whatever happened has already happened. We can't bring back the dead to life. However they would always remain in our memories 🌸❄
The clothes represent all the teachers and the students who went on the Sewol ferry trip but the clothes piled outside the train represents how the death is outside the world
In the movie "Snowpiercer",people are stuck in the train due to a frozen world outside.
One of the passengers began to suspect that there's a way out of the train. After seeing the snowflake falling he saw it was formed. Snowflakes cannot be formed if the temperature is frozen which meant that the Earth was warming up.
Jimin is the first boy among the members to open the door for outside. He steps outside and covers up the whole tragedy. The survivors are now free of guilt and have found justice.
Jimin takes the shoes that he found on the sea and hangs them on a tree. The shoes hanging on a tree represents the death and the tree represents hope and new life.
