Years ago, back when the Internet was less than half its present size, I used to go and meet the stars of Doctor Who and try to stand back to back with them. Over the next few weeks I'm going to share some of those photos from the Si Hart Camps It Up With The Stars archives.
Today's photo comes from a hot day at Longleat in 2003, where I stood back to back with Doctor number 6, Colin Baker. We both put a lot of effort into our poses that day!
Today's photo is one of the very earliest, when I first set out on this crazy quest. Tenth Planet in Barking is our setting and our star today is Richard Franklin. When I asked him for a back to back photo, quick as a flash he said, 'How about a front to front!' cheeky sod!
My Camping It Up star today is Lalla Ward from 2004, at Invasion, Barking. The queue waiting for Lalla was immense, so she graciously made her way down it, signing as she went. I remember her bring really lovely. My favourite companion didn't let me down. Gorgeous pic, big smiles
Today's Camping It Up takes us back to 2002 and a trip to the Stamp Centre. Our star is the gorgeous and wonderful Louise Jameson who threw herself into the back to back pose with a very big smile. We had matching jackets I note. Lovely lady!
Today's Camping It Up pic is a previously unseen one from 2009 and our star today is Jacqueline King! She was wonderful, friendly, giggly and very happy to pose back to back with me. I think she gives it her all!
Today's Camping It Up star is a true Doctor Who icon, The Brig himself, Nicholas Courtney. Not back to back, but to surprise him, he turned round for the photo and I was wearing an eyepatch! 'Good lord!' he exclaimed, 'An eyepatch photo!'
What an absolute star he was.
Because its Friday you can also have the alternative version too. Oh he is so missed, isn't he?
Today's Camping It Up photo comes from Longleat in 2002 and was the first photo from the second series. Its an Ace photo with the one and only Sophie Aldred. She threw herself into the back to back pose with gusto!
Today's Camping It Up photo was something of a coup at the time. Our star is Eighth Doctor Paul McGann from 2003 when he wasn't so keen on having his photo taken with fans. I nervously asked him for a photo at his first convention appearance and he said yes! With Beer in hand!
Today's Camping It Up photo comes from 2008 and A Fantom Films event celebrating The Key To Time season. It's our first star from behind the scenes, the late great script editor, Anthony Read. He was a lovely man who seemed very proud of his time on Doctor Who.
Today's Camping It Up pic from 2008 features the only star I've been back to back with who's actually taller than me, even when he was sitting down! Yes, it's The Cyber Controller and the Giant Robot himself, the mighty Michael Kilgarriff! I love his expression here.
As it's her birthday today, my Camping It Up star is
@ManningOfficial! I first met Katy in 2002 in Barking. She came running out of the shop to assure us that she was signing as fast as she could but that she loved talking to everyone! One of my favourite photos, I adore her!
Today's Camping It Up star is Producer, Director and Writer and true gentleman, Barry Letts. This was taken at his last convention appearance in 2008, at a Fantom Films celebration of his time on the show. He was a little frail but as sharp as ever. A lovely man.
You may not recognise today's Camping It Up star, but you'd know his voice. Yes, it's second voice of K9, David Brierley. He was a proper avuncular gentleman. I love his sideburns! He comes off a bit better than I do in this photo!
Today's Camping It Up star is my favourite villainess from Doctor Who, Cessair of Diplos herself, Susan Engel! She was rather flummoxed at being asked for a back to back shot and apparently talked about it all the way home, so a friend tells me!
Today's Camping It Up star is the Seventh Doctor himself, Sylvester McCoy. One of my earliest pics, this was at The Stamp Centre in 2002. I like how bemused Sylv looks, very in character! 2002 was obviously the year of our stars wearing leather jackets.
Today's Camping It Up star is the first of the Big Finish companions I met, the glorious India Fisher. This gorgeous lady made it from the stage at Panoptican 40 to the bar in record time! The only disappointing thing about this photo is that you can see her amazing boots!
Today's Camping It Up star is perhaps the rarest sighting from my whole collection. Star of The Doctor Who Afterparty and Dodo herself, Jackie Lane! This was from late 2002 and I have to say the lady herself was really lovely and delightful. I love our matching smiles!
Today's Camping It Up Star is one of Doctor Who's most prolific guest star, Michael Sheard. As you'd expect, he gave the back to back pose his all and far outshines me! This was from 2003 at the shambolic but fun Panopticon 40 event, where Michael Sheard set up his own stall!
Today's Camping It Up photo is a previously unseen with a star from my favourite Doctor Who story. Yes, it's the wonderful Catherine Schell. I had a delightful day sat with her at Memorabilia in 2009, where she gossiped all day about her career. You can see how much I loved her!
Today's Camping It Up star is companion of the fourth and fifth Doctors, Matthew Waterhouse. Again, this was something of a coup at the time, as Matthew was living abroad and not often in the UK. We're slightly soft focus, but I like this one. I loved my Easy Tiger t-shirt!
Today's Camping It Up star comes from behind the scenes on the show. She designed some of the most outrageous costumes ever, it is the wonderful June Hudson! Really lovely and full of stories of the stars she dressed and we spent ages talking about Lalla Ward's fabulous costumes
Today's Camping It Up star is Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison. I actually made him laugh by doing a JNT point, but that was shortly after the photo was taken. Sadly only one of us looked into the camera, but I'm fond of this photo from 2002.
Today's Camping It Up star is another Big Finish companion, the always wonderful Maggie Stables. I was very pleased to meet her and tell her just how brilliant I thought she was as Evelyn. 'Oh bless you!' she replied. She's much missed.
Today's Camping It Up star appeared twice as a guest star in Doctor Who, as Hayden in Tomb of the Cybermen and then as the Axon Man in Claws of Axos, yes it's Bernard Holley! He gave the classic arms folded Camping It Up pose, like a pro!
Today's Camping It Up star is the much missed Deborah Watling. Oh Debs was so lovely on both occasions I met her and very obviously much tinier than I am! This was 2004, in very cramped conditions at the Stamp Centre and one of the final photos from the original run.
Today's Camping It Up star was one of Doctor Who's most prolific directors, Christopher Barry. Here's a man who is giving it his all and obviously delighted to be photographed with me! I'm quite restrained in comparison. This is autumn 2002. I bunked off work for this signing!
Today's Camping It Up Star was probably the Doctor, maybe. Yes It's The Valeyard himself, Michael Jayston. This was a very early photo from the series, second one I think, taken on the same day as Richard Franklin's. Michael looked a bit scared about standing back to back.
Today's Camping It Up photo is one of my all time favourites. Jacqueline Pearce was such a star and I'd thought she was brilliant for many years. I finally met her in 2003 and she really didn't disappoint. She flung her arms up into the Maximum Power pose with little prompting!
Today's Camping It Up star is THE Doctor, the one and only Tom Baker. I was so nervous about meeting him, as he'd been my Doctor since I was small, but he was just lovely! He gave a lot of his time that day in 2002 and we got a fantastic photo. Tom is rightly a legend.
Today's Camping It Up star is the only person who recognised me and asked for a photo. It's Big Finish companion and good friend, Conrad Westmaas! Proper arms folded back to back pose here. We've agreed that when we can we're going to recreate this photo from 2004! Happy days!
Today's Camping It Up star is Primi Townshend, Mula in the Pirate Planet. She was a really fascinating lady with great stories about being reunited with her family during the making of the story. Lovely, friendly lady, very smiley!
Today's Camping It Up star is Honor Blackman. This previously unseen shot comes from Memorabilia in 2009 and Honor was truly wonderful. I met her again a couple of years later at the big celebration of The Avengers 50th anniversary and she was just as brilliant there.
Today's previously unseen Camping It Up star is Oscar winning writer and creator of K9 himself, Bob Baker. Bob was a nice guy with lots of great stories. Will K9: Timequake be one of those stories? Will we ever find out?
Today's Camping It Up star was more heard than seen in the show. Yes, it's original Dalek voice artist and Professor Kerensky himself, and best known as the voice of Thunderbirds' Parker, David Graham. He's a lovely, humble man and I really like this photo.
Today's Camping It Up star is companion to the first and second Doctors, the one and only truly delightful Anneke Wills. Anneke is a wonderful human being, very happy to meet her fans and always has some wonderful stories to tell. It's been a delight to meet her!
Today's Camping It Up star is Tegan Jovanka herself, the legendary Janet Fielding. We seem to be soft focus today, but never mind, Janet still looks radiant! I remember this was a big rush to go in the middle of something else that day in summer 2002, but well worth it.
Today's Camping It Up star is Frank Jarvis, from the two classic Doctor Who stories, Underworld and Power of Kroll. He was brilliant, really ebullient and effusive about his work on Doctor Who and beyond. Another guy with so many stories to tell. His expression is priceless here!
Today's Camping It Up star is from the Doctor Who story I'm watching right now... yes it's The Mind of Evil's Chin Lee herself, Pik Sen Lim. Lovely lady who was really happy to talk about her time on the show and her writer husband Don Houghton.
Today's Camping It Up star is a true legend. Writer, script editor, noveliser extraordinaire, it's the one and only Terrance Dicks. Quite honestly there aren't words for the impact his books had on me as a kid, even his non- Who ones I loved. Much missed, but never forgotten.
In another unseen photo, today's Camping It Up star is the gorgeous Debbie Chazen. Here we are, squeezed together at Memorabilia in 2009. Debbie is a wonderfully warm and lovely actor and it was great to spend some time with her!
Today's Camping It Up star is Troughton era companion, the always amazing Wendy Padbury. Wendy is gorgeous and fun and we got a great photo in the cramped conditions at Tenth Planet at the start of 2003. She's tiny compared to me, so a back to back shot wouldn't have worked!
Today's Camping It Up star is Doctor Who guest star, Bernard Horsfall. Bernard was always a solid presence whenever he turned up in the show and he was a very nice man too. I rather like his expression in this photo- it's certainly better than mine!
Today's Camping It Up star is another previously unseen one and its the one and only Jean Marsh. What a lady! I had a wonderful day looking after her at Memorabilia in 2009. She was gossipy and happy and just a wonderful person. One of my favourite stars!
Today's Camping It Up stars are wonderful Davros actor Terry Molloy and his disgraced assistant Leslie Grantham. This photo was taken in a hurry in Nov 2002. Only just made it in time then had a very drunken, fun day out before ending up in hospital with a dislocated shoulder.
Today's Camping It Up star is the much missed Doctor Who guest star David Collings. David looks so Doctor-ish here, whereas I just look tired! It's Dec 2002 and I'd had a lot of photos done at Tenth Planet that year! David was great, commenting how camp he looked in Robots!
Today's Camping It Up star is original companion and Doctor Who's Granddaughter, Carole Ann Ford. While the photo turned out well, I don't remember enjoying this signing a great deal. Ah well, not everyone is a classic, but Carole's place in Who history is truly justified.
Today's Camping It Up star is the gorgeous David Ames from Plant of the Dead. I'm easily outclassed here! Lovely, chatty guy. This photo is another one I've never shared, from Memorabilia 2009.
Today's Camping It Up star is voice of the Nucleus himself, John Leeson. John is a lovely man, far removed from his gurgling, dragging voice as the Nucleus!
And, of course, John Leeson was also the voice of robot dog and the first thing in Doctor Who that I loved, K9. Honestly when I met him at Longleat in 2003 I instantly adored him, especially when he did the voice for me! Look how happy I am!
Today's Camping It Up star is Professor Cliff Jones himself, Stewart Bevan. A really smiley guy, Stewart Bevan was obviously so proud to have been in Doctor Who and was a joy to meet. You can see how he stole the heart of Jo and of Katy Manning at the time too!
Today we have two Camping It Up stars for the price of one, and Two Doctors to boot! Yes, it's Sylvester McCoy and Colin Baker, both of whom are looking fantastic on what was a very hot afternoon in summer 2003.
Today's #DoctorWhoDay Camping It Up pic comes from early 2013, and features four Doctors! What a brilliant day that was! Great convention and a great photo too!
Today's Camping It Up star is QVC legend and knight of Tara, Paul Lavers! Honestly, he was a right laugh, full of wonderful anecdotes from Doctor Who and beyond. He was such a pro that he gave out his promo postcards to everyone at this event celebrating the Key to Time!
Today's Camping It Up star is Doctor Who guest actor across the eras, Packer himself, Peter Halliday. Terrible photo of me, but this was a difficult signing as I remember and Mr Halliday was somewhat slightly grumpy. Still, you can't win 'em all!
Today's Camping It Up star is the very much missed, the truly wonderful Elisabeth Sladen. I met Elisabeth at Borders on Oxford Street in 2007, just as The Sarah Jane Adventures began broadcasting. She was absolutely wonderful and even my closed eyes can't ruin the photo. Glorious
Today's Camping It Up star is The Invasion's Isobel herself, Sally Faulkner. Gorgeous lady, who was just so full of enthusiasm for her time on the show and again had wonderful stories of creeping into manholes in a miniskirt and feather boa! Previously unseen photo!
Today's Camping It Up star appeared in Survival but is much better known from bringing Bernice Summerfield to life on audio. Yes, it's Lisa Bowerman. It was a difficult signing where photos were frowned on, but Lisa was very gracious and gave her all!
Today's previously unseen Camping It Up star is the other half of the Van Hoff marriage from Voyage of the Damned, Clive Rowe. Clive was a great guy and seemed really pleased that I'd remembered him from his appearances in the Harry Hill Show from years back!
Today's Camping It Up star is Sgt Benton himself, John Levene. He told bad jokes, he made time to talk to everyone and wasn't quite as mad as he often is when I met him! Always astonished looking at this photo that his head is twice as big as mine!
Today's Camping It Up star might look all smiley and happy but put a mask on him and he's the most evil genius in the universe, Davros. Yes, it's second Davros actor David Gooderson and he was a joy to meet back in 2009.
Today's Camping It Up star is now better known as a puppeteer but you'd recognise him as Unstoffe, yes it's the voice of Hartley Hare, Nigel Plaskitt! Nigel is a thoroughly interesting man, with many fun tales to tell. And he b'aint never suffered from the scringes!
Today's Camping It Up star is the hairy legged highlander himself, Frazer Hines. Well this one turned out well, though we all remarked on his newly blond hair... It was quite a day all-round really...
Today's Camping It Up star appeared in Battlefield and played Frobisher the penguin for Big Finish, yes it's Robert Jezek! I think this was a signing for The Maltese Penguin in 2002 and I remember he was a nice guy!
Today's Camping It Up star is a Movellan and a soldier, yes it's Tony Osoba. Tony was in the first Doctor Who adventure i saw and seemed delighted to find this out, though he said that made him feel very old! Another previously unseen photo from 2009.
Today's Camping It Up star is barmaid and confidante of William Shakespeare, Andree Bernard. I remember her giggling as we took this photo and doesn't she look every so smiley. This at Memorabilia in March 2009 and hasn't been seen before.
Today's Camping It Up star is the now somewhat controversial Gary Downie. All I can say was he cut a lonely and sad figure when I met him in 2002. He was absolutely delighted to be asked for a photo and autograph.
Today's Camping It Up star is the hero of Zanak and later head honcho of the Metropolitan Police, the one and only David Warwick! He knew how to do a classic Camping It Up photo, that's for sure, right down to the expression. I'm easily outclassed here in this photo from 2008!
When I started Camping It Up, today's star was the ultimate goal. I always said she'd be the final camp and indeed she was, first time round... But this photo from 2008 comes first. It's the ultra-glam Mary Tamm! And my god, she was brilliant. I mean LOOK! EFFORTLESS CAMP!
In 2009 I had another chance to Camp It Up with Deborah Watling and managed to get a better photo where I wasn't looming in the foreground. I had a lovely day looking after her at Memorabilia and had a great time chatting with her.
Also in 2009, I had the pleasure of meeting Katy Manning again. When I asked for a back to back photo she jumped onto a chair to stand next to me to add some height! Amazing!
Today's Camping It Up star rather appropriately appeared in The Time Warrior. Yes, it's Meg herself, the mighty Sheila Fay. She was utterly delightful and I wish I'd had a chance to meet her again and ask all about her time on one of my favourite shows, Together.
Today's Camping It Up photo is one of the finest ever. So good it made it to SFX magazine! Our stars are Tom Baker and rather wonderfully Sylvester McCoy who photobombed me beautifully! I love this photo very much!
One last one to come tomorrow and it's truly a cracker!
Well it's the final Camping It Up photo today and it a Christmas Cracker! This was the final photo of the original series of photos and one of the happiest moments of my life.... Yes, I'm Camping It Up with 2 Romanas, Mary Tamm and Lalla Ward!
I must say a big thank you to @SiHunt1234 for coming up with the idea of camping it up in the first place and taking the early photos and to my other fantastic photographers @RichardBeeby and @stealexanderuk. It was all so much fun and great to look back on.
