Why fully own slaves and be responsible for their food and shelter, when all you really want is their labor?

Some very clever people planned together at some point and figured a way to convert all the people of the world into slaves.
They found a way do it where the vast majority would not even realize that they were enslaved. No chains needed.
Free range slavery.

It would be hyperbolic to suggest that we have it worse than the slaves who were controlled by chains and whips.
That form of slavery was physically tortuous for the slave and an inefficient labor source for the master.
