To entertain me while I work from home, I'm listening to Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in order from 500 to 1. Already 30 albums in, but I'm going to keep a thread so I remember my thoughts.
500 - Arcade Fire - Funeral (2004) - not listened to it for about ten years, but still loved it as I did when I was 15. Still a banger.
499 - Rufus featuring Chaka Khan - Ask Rufus (1977) - never heard of this before and find it hilarious that Chaka Khan fronted a band called Rufus. Enjoyed it but thinking back can't remember any classics
498 - Suicide - Suicide (1977) - listened to it as a student. Still sounds great. Classic from start to finish
497 - Various Artists - The Indestructible Beat of Soweto (1985) - compilation of South African music. Loved it, very upbeat. This was my favourite track:
496 - Shakira - Dónde Están los Ladrones (1998) - was a bit skeptical, but thought it was pretty good. Although can't remember any highlights now
495 - Boyz II Men - II (1991) - this was fine, kind of as you'd expect, good singing of soul songs. Didn't stand out and didn't 'leave me sobbing in the fetal position' as Rolling Stone predicted
494 - The Ronettes - Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes (1964) - classic tunes, can't really go wrong
493 - Marvin Gaye - Here, My Dear (1978) - an album powered entirely by divorced guy energy. Marvin Gaye singing about his ex-wife. Strange, but good. And a cracking album cover
492 - Bonnie Raitt - Nick of Time (1989) - Pretty great from start to finish. Didn't know any of the songs before.
491 - Harry Styles - Fine Line (2019) - Wasn't looking forward to this. It was fine but a bit bland and unmemorable. Feel like it's a benefactor of recency bias, but then again I'm hardly the target audience
490 - Linda Ronstadt - Heart Like a Wheel (1975) - Now we're talking. This was great, one of my favourites so far. Only 30mins long, but every track's good. Never listened to her before either.
489 - Phil Spector and Various Artists - Back to Mono (1958-1969) (1991) - I love a good 3 min Phil Spector song, but this shouldn't be on the list. It's a 3 hour compilation of everything he did for a decade. No one wants to listen to it for 3 hours. Definitely the worst so far
488 - The Stooges - The Stooges (1969) - Great album, goes a bit stereotypically 1960s stoner with a ten minute long track in the middle. The best tracks are the classics that everyone already knows, so I didn't find any new favourites
487 - Black Flag - Damaged (1981) - Listened to it before, but still enjoyed it. Pretty great all the way through
486 - John Mayer - Continuum (2006) - I remember at uni someone asked me if I like the John Mayer Trio and I thought they meant the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion then had to listen to this. I wish this had been the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Pretty mediocre stuff
485 - Richard and Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight (1974) - stone cold classic. I just hope Pour Down Like Silver is also on the list
484 - Lady Gaga - Born This Way (2011) - I wouldn't choose to listen to this, but I thought it was pretty good. More fun than some of the other albums at least
483 - Muddy Waters - The Anthology (2001) - another 3 hour compilation that really shouldn't be here. Luckily my listen was split between two days, so I didn't feel like I was going crazy
482 - The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde (1992) - Only knew Passing Me By before I listened. The whole album was great. Similar feel to Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul
481 - Belle and Sebastian - If You’re Feeling Sinister (1996) - Actually just listened to this a couple of months ago. Another one that I know practically all the words to
480 - Miranda Lambert - The Weight of These Wings (2016) - Never even heard of her before, but loved this. It was a long album, but never got bored
479 - Selena - Amor Prohibido (1994) - Never heard of her either or even Tejana music, but I thought this was good. Very sad story
478 - The Kinks - Something Else by the Kinks (1968) - Some great tracks, but thought there was some filler on there. Almost Kinks on autopilot at times. Can't argue with Waterloo Sunset though
477 - Howlin’ Wolf - Moanin' in the Moonlight (1959) - this was great, the guitar, the voice, everything. Much prefer this than some compilation like they did with Muddy Waters
476 - Sparks - Kimono My House (1974) - One of the all time greats. Bangers from start to finish. Probably the best album so far
475 - Sheryl Crow - Sheryl Crow (1996) - Albums in the 1990s started getting really long for some reason. But I thought this was good, no complaints
474 - Big Star - #1 Record (1972) - Loved it, obviously Thirteen is the best track, but great stuff throughout
473 - Daddy Yankee - Barrio Fino (2004) - listened to this one this morning. Puerto Rican rap. Thought it was pretty good, but way too long
472 - SZA - Ctrl (2017) - Never listened to her before, but enjoyed this. Pretty great all the way through
471 - Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow (1967) - Found it weird that it didn't open with Somebody to Love, it seems like the perfect opener. That and White Rabbit are great, the other stuff was pretty good, but didn't really stand out
470 - Juvenile - 400 Degreez (1998) - Another artist that's completely new to me. This was really great. A good 90s feeling, great beats. Maybe too long though. Recurring theme seems to be, if it's a 90s rap album it's underrated, if it's a 60s rock album, it's overrated
469 - Manu Chao - Clandestino (1998) - nice, pleasant album, felt like summer holidays
468 - The Rolling Stones - Some Girls (1978) - this was good. Enjoyed it more than the Kinks' album. Miss You in particular is great
467 - Maxwell - BLACKsummers’night (2009) - chilled out 2000s soul. I quite enjoyed it, it didn't outstay it's welcome. Favourite track was Pretty Wings. Phoenix Rise was a good instrumental ending
466 - The Beach Boys - The Beach Boys Today! (1965) - first time I've listened to this and it was fantastic. Help Me, Rhonda was so good I had to play it twice
465 - King Sunny Ade - The Best of the Classic Years (2003) - great bit of afropop. Another compilation, but thankfully more of 'an introduction to' rather than 'here's everything that person ever recorded' as the other two on this list so far have been
464 - The Isley Brothers - 3 + 3 (1973) - definitely one of the best albums on the list so far. Every song is a banger. Ernie Isley on guitar is incredible. Highlights: That Lady, Listen to the Music, Sunshine (Go Away Today), Summer Breeze
463 - Laura Nyro - Eli and the Thirteenth Confession (1968) - it was pretty good, standard 1960s singer songwriter stuff
462 - The Flying Burrito Brothers - The Gilded Palace of Sin (1969) - another 60s album, but enjoyed it. Classic country rock, you pretty much know what you're getting
461 - Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago (2008) - indie folk that I loved when it came out. Still really liked it
460 - Lorde - Melodrama (2017) - this was great. I'd only heard Green Light before, but enjoyed pretty much the whole thing. Highlights: Green Light, The Louvre, Hard Feelings/Loveless
459 - Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon: The End of the Day (2009) - I liked this. Make Her Say and Pursuit of Happiness were probably my favourite tracks. It was maybe a bit long though
458 - Jason Isbell - Southeastern (2013) - never heard of this guy, but apparently he was in Drive-By Truckers. I think I prefer Drive-By Truckers, but this was good. Best track: Flying Over Water. Also he looks a bit like Mark Goldbridge
457 - Sinead O'Connor - I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got (1990) - only really knew Nothing Compares 2 U, which is still amazing. Other highlights are Emperor's New Clothes, Black Boys on Mopeds and Jump in the River. All in all, a great album
456 - Al Green - Greatest Hits (1975) - you've got to admire someone who puts out a greatest hits album at the age of 29. Wasn't as into it as much I thought I would be though
455 - Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley/Go Bo Diddley (1959) - this is actually two albums, so I've no idea why they are counting them as one. Best tracks: Dearest Darling, Say Man and The Clock Strikes Twelve
454 - Can - Ege Bamyası (1972) - every track is a classic. Already listened to it many times. Favourite tracks are Spoon and Vitamin C
453 - Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine (1989) - I've only listened to Ghosts by NIN before, so this is very different, but really good. Like a more industrial Depeche Mode. Highlights: Something I Can Never Have and The Only Time, but the whole thing was great
452 - Diana Ross and the Supremes - Anthology (1974) - another compilation of everything they ever recorded. While the songs are pretty much all great, it's tiresome listening to the same artist for like 3 hours. I don't think these compilations should've counted
451 - Roberta Flack - First Take (1969) - great album, kind of like jazz soul. Highlights: Compared to What, First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, Tryin' Times and Ballad of the Sad Young Men
450 - Paul and Linda McCartney - Ram (1971) - a silly album, it's like they were goofing about. I'll take this over Imagine anyday. It even has the "we're so sorry Uncle Albert" song from Only Fools and Horses. Highlights: Too Many People, 3 Legs, Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey
449 - The White Stripes - Elephant (2003) - the first rock album I bought (along with the Darkness - Permission to Land which better be in the top 100). Loved it when I was 13, still really fun now
448 - Otis Redding - Dictionary of Soul (1966) - great album cover. Try a Little Tenderness is the stand out track and always reminds me of the ending to the Alan Clarke film Road. Other highlights: I'm Sick Y'All, Sweet Lorene and My Lover's Prayer
447 - Bad Bunny - X 100pre (2017) - never heard of this guy, it's like Puerto Rican rap. Wasn't really my thing, highlight of the album was Stone Cold turning up in one of the videos and helping Bad Bunny fight some guys
446 - Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidanada (1970) - so good, like spiritual, Indian jazz harp music. Easily one of the best albums on the list so far. Sending me down a rabbit hole of listening to Coltrane's other stuff
445 - Yes - Close to the Edge (1972) - you're classic early 70s prog rock album. I actually really enjoyed it
444 - Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine (2005) - reminded me a lot of the Magnolia soundtrack (I guess that's Jon Brion producing). Highlights: Get Him Back, Oh Well, Please Please Please and Waltz (Better Than Fine)
443- David Bowie - Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) (1980) - first Bowie on the list and one I'm not that familiar with. Fun fact, the woman on It's No Game is also on the front cover to Sparks' Kimono My House. Highlights: It's No Game, Ashes to Ashes, Fashion, Kingdom Come
442 - The Weekend - Beauty Behind the Madness (2015) - modern R&B pop. Some pretty good songs, but the album is way too long. Highlights: Losers, The Hills and Angel
441 - Britney Spears - Blackout (2007) - it's weird looking back at pop from when I was a teenager. This completely passed me by at the time. I liked the album tracks better than the singles. Highlights: Heaven On Earth and Get Naked
440 - Loretta Lynn - Coal Miner's Daughter (1971) - took me ages to find this on youtube. Good old fashioned bit of country and the album is less than 30mins long. Highlights: Coal Miner's Daughter, Hello Darlin', What Makes Me Tick
439 - James Brown - Sex Machine (1970) - a partially faked live album (some tracks have crowd noise dubbed over it). Highlights: There Was a Time, It's a Man's Man's Man's World
438 - Blur - Parklife (1994) - first time I've listened in at least ten years. Still feels like the quintessential Britpop album. There are better Blur albums imo, but it's still fun. Favourite track: This is a Low
437 - Primal Scream - Screamadelica (1991) - another big 90s British album and another I listened to a lot when I was younger. Still great. Highlights: Higher Than the Sun, Inner Flight
436 - 2Pac - All Eyez on Me (1996) - never really listened to 2Pac before. It was very long, even by 90s standards, but grew on me. Highlights: 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted, Life Goes On, Tradin War Stories, Can't C Me, Thug Passion
435 - Pet Shop Boys - Actually (1987) - always liked the Pet Shop Boys, but not listened to an album in full before. The singles were the standouts, but the whole thing was great. Highlights: What Have I Done to Deserve This?, Rent, It's a Sin, Heart and King's Cross
434 - Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994) - another band I listened to a lot when I was a student, and surprised that I still know all the lyrics. So a very nostalgic listen. Highlights: Silence Kid, Elevate Me Later, Gold Soundz and Range Life
433 - LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver (2007) - one of the albums of my teenage years, I remember seeing them live 3 times in one summer. Get Innocuous is one of my favourite opening tracks. All My Friends is still amazing. Other highlights: Someone Great, Us V Them
432 - Usher - Confessions (2004) - Usher's one of those artists I knew were huge, but I couldn't name more than a couple of songs by him. Catchy R&B pop, feels very early 2000s. Singles tended to be the standouts. Highlights: Yeah, Confessions Part 2, Burn, Truth Hurts
431 - Los Lobos - How Will the Wolf Survive? (1984) - I think this genre is chicano rock. Very upbeat and nice and short. Highlights: The Breakdown, I Got Loaded and Lil' King of Everything
430 - Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True (1977) - first Elvis Costello album I've listened to. Pretty good and another short album. Highlights: Miracle Man, Alison, Red Shoes, Waiting for the End of the World
429 - The Four Tops - Reach Out (1967) - very strong opening two songs. Crammed with classic songs, with a little Monkees double in the middle. Highlights: Reach Out I'll Be There, Walk Away Renee, Last Train to Clarksville, Standing in the Shadows of Love, Bernadette
428 - Hüsker Dü - New Day Rising (1985) - absolutely perfect album. Rolling Stone describes it as 'garbage trucks trying to sing Beach Boys songs', which I love. Highlights: New Day Rising, I Apologize, Celebrated Summer, Terms of Psychic Warfare, Books About UFOs
427 - Al Green - Call Me (1973) - second Al Green album in the list. Preferred this to the earlier compilation album. Highlights: Call Me (Come Back Home), Here I Am (Come and Take Me), You Ought to Be with Me
426 - Lucinda Williams - Lucinda Williams (1988) - another Americana country rock album I'd not heard of. This was great though. Highlights: I Just Want to See You so Bad, The Night's Too Long, Big Red Sun Blues, Changed the Locks, Passionate Kisses, Side of the Road
425 - Paul Simon - Paul Simon (1972) - nice album to start the day with. First half of the album is better than the second though. Highlights: Mother and Child Reunion, Duncan, Armistice Day, Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard
424 - Beck - Odelay (1996) - I remember listening to this when I was a teenager. I like the mish-mash of genres. Highlights: Lord Only Knows, The New Pollution, Jack-Ass
423 - Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One (1997) - one of my all time favourite albums. Very eclectic album. The music's amazing, the voices merge together perfectly. Highlights: Moby Octopad, Sugarcube, Damage, Autumn Sweater, Center of Gravity, Spec Bebop
422 - Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On (1973) - Gaye's second album in the list. The king of horny albums. Surprised how short it was though. Highlights: Let's Get It On, Distant Lover, You Sure Love to Ball
421 - M.I.A. - Arular (2005) - not listened to any of her more recent stuff, but this is still really good. Highlights: Bucky Done Gun, 10 Dollar, Galang
420 - Earth, Wind and Fire - That’s the Way of the World (1975) - I didn't expect it to be so funky. First half was great, second gets a bit experimental. Highlights: Shining Star, That's the Way of the World, Happy Feelin'
419 - Eric Church - Chief (2011) - another country singer I've never heard of. Kind of what you expect, but the songs were catchy and I enjoyed it. Highlights: Creepin', Drink In My Hand, Country Music Jesus, Over When It's Over
418 - Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms (1985) - the only Dire Straits related album I've listened to is the Local Hero soundtrack. This felt extremely 80s, which to me is a positive. Highlights: So Far Away, Your Latest Trick, Ride Across the River
417 - Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959) - a classic album, I've been a fan since I watched the Shirley Clarke film Ornette: Made in America. Seems a bit low in the list really. Highlights: Lonely Woman, Peace
416 - The Roots - Things Fall Apart (1999) - fantastic album. Particularly the middle where it's just hit after hit. The sounds and samples are great. Highlights: The Next Movement, Without a Doubt, Ain't Sayin' Nothin' New, Double Trouble, 100% Dundee, You Got Me
415 - The Meters - Look-Ka Py Py (1969) - not familiar with these lads, but this was a cracker. Instrumental funk album that's probably been sampled by a thousand hip hop groups. Highlights: Look-Ka Py Py, Pungee, This Is My Last Affair, 9 'til 5
414 - Chic - Risqué (1979) - perfect opening with Good Times, although it's a tough ask to follow it, the album's still great. Highlights: Good Times, My Forbidden Lover, What About Me
413 - Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory (1970) - pretty much the kind of music you expect in a Rolling Stone list. Highlights: Ramble Tamble, Lookin' Out My Back Door, Run Through the Jungle, My Baby Left Me, Long As I Can See the Light
412 - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - Going to a Go Go (1965) - love the title. The songs were great, classic 60s soul. Highlights: The Tracks of My Tears, My Girl Has Gone, My Baby Changes Like the Weather
411 - Bob Dylan - Love and Theft (2001) - first Dylan album I've listened to more recent than Blood on the Tracks. Wasn't a big fan at first, but got more into it as it went on. Highlights: Mississippi, Floater (Too Much to Ask), High Water, Honest with Me, Po' Boy, Cry a While
410 - The Beach Boys - Wild Honey (1967) - the second Beach Boys album in the list. Weirder than their earlier stuff and very short. Highlights: Wild Honey, I Was Made To Love Her, Darlin', Here Comes the Night, How She Boogalooed It
409 - Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead (1970) - in the middle of a very late 60s/early 70s run in the list. Never listened to Grateful Dead before. Quite liked it, relaxing country folk. Highlights: Uncle John's Band, Dire Wolf, Cumberland Blues, Casey Jones
408 - Motörhead - Ace of Spades (1980) - this is the heaviest album on the list so far, the only one that could be described as metal. Perhaps the voters have a blind spot. Highlights: Ace of Spades, Shoot You in the Back, Fast and Loose, (We Are) The Roadcrew, The Hammer
407 - Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (1969) - great album, the guitar solo in Down by the River was the best part. I'm assuming there'll be more Neil Young later in the list. Other highlights: Cinnamon Girl, The Losing End, Cowgirl in the Sand
406 - The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs (1999) - 3 hrs long, it's a bit of a marathon, but there's so many great songs on there. Highlights: I Don't Want to Get Over You, When My Boy Walks Down the Street, Long Forgotten Fairytale, Papa Was a Rodeo, Yeah! Oh Yeah!
405 - Various - Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era (1972) - compilation of 60s garage rock. Highlights: Barbarians - Moulty, The Castaways - Liar Liar, 13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss Me, Amboy Dukes - Baby Please Don't Go
404 - Anita Baker - Rapture (1986) - love discovering music like this that ordinary I never would've listened to. Apparently the genre is known as 'quiet storm'. Really great album. Highlights: Sweet Love, Been So Long, Mystery, No One in the World, Same Ole Love. Watch Your Step
