I’m challenging myself! During October, I’m aiming to read one novella / short novel every day. This may fall apart within a week, but let’s give it a shot.
First up: a reread of Megan Hunter’s stunning ‘The End We Start From’. #amreading

Second in my October #novellathon has been Penelope Fitzgerald’s beautiful, sad & witty ‘The Bookshop’. #amreading
Today’s read has been the sexy, Icelandic and impossible to pin down ‘Moonstone: the boy who never was’ by Sjón (translated by Victoria Cribb) - which, fittingly, is set during the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic & so feels very close to home. #amreading #novellathon
Number 4 in my October #novellathon has been Becky Chambers’ science fiction masterpiece, ‘To Be Taught If Fortunate’: a book that questions our right to scientific exploration, our responsibilities to seek knowledge, and ask us to look to the universe for answers. #amreading
Book 5: ‘The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly’, by Sun-mi Hwang (translated by Chi-young Kim). A tender story about a hen who longs for more, with all the cosy feeling & danger of a fairy tale. #novellathon #amreading
Today’s novella has been H P Lovecraft’s sci-fi/ horror adventure, ‘At the Mountains of Madness’, following the discoveries of an ill-fated Antarctic expedition. #novellathon #amreading
This morning I’ve been sitting in the garden shed, reading Takashi Hiraide’s ‘The Guest Cat’ (translated by Eric Selland), with my own guest cat for company. #novellathon #amreading
Today’s read has been the proof of Rebecca Watson’s experimental novel-in-a-day, ‘little scratch’ - out in January. #amreading #novellathon
Book 11 is Megan Hunter’s psychological new novel, ‘The Harpy’, taking myth and realism and combining them to create something that feels part intimate unflinching portrait, part fable. #amreading #novellathon
Today’s novella is a reread of Ernest Hemingway’s classic, ‘The Old Man and the Sea’. #amreading #novellathon
Today I have been rereading Max Porter’s stunning ‘Grief is the Thing with Feathers’. Such an incredible book. #amreading #novellathon
Today’s novella is ‘The House Without Windows’, by Barbara Newhall Follett, first published in 1927, and written when she was just 12 years old - pictured here in a beautiful edition illustrated by Jackie Morris. #amreading #novellathon
Book number 17 is ‘All My Friends are Superheroes’ by Andrew Kaufman. Witty, joyful, sad & heart-warming.
#amreading #novellathon

Today’s book is ‘The Friend’ by Sigrid Nunez. (Thank you to @mrsjaneymac for recommending it to me!) #amreading
Today’s book has been ‘The Arrival of Missives’, by Aliya Whiteley: a novella with a gradual & haunting build. #amreading #novellathon
Book number 20: ‘The Buddha in the Attic’, by Julie Otsuka. So rare & fascinating to read a whole book written in 3rd person plural - it works so so well. #amreading #novellathon
Book 21: this lovely old Penguin Classics edition of Aldous Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’. #amreading #novellathon
Today we* are reading ‘Bartleby the Scrivener’, by Herman Melville - courtesy of the lovely @pollyrowena & @likewinterblue
#amreading #novellathon
*I’m doing the reading. Monty’s mostly snoozing on the chair or loudly mewing for scratches.
