THREAD: “The Roar Of The Crowd”

Every TakeOver match from Arrival to Portland rewatched in order, because I miss audiences and the NXT product I dearly, dearly loved:
Gonna assess every match based on how fun it was to watch as well as taking into account the context of the time.

In keeping with how most view NXT in 2020, the Official Rating System for each match will simply be either “IT’S STILL GOOD!” or “It’s Gone”
Let’s Set Sail!

NXT ARRIVAL
Full Sail University, Orlando, Florida
February 27th 2014
Cesaro Vs Sami Zayn.

Jesus fucking Christ. Just incredible meaty performances from both as this nearly tops a 2013 MOTYC. Cesaro is JACKED, Zayn is RIPPED and they both beat the everloving shit out of each other. Hard hitting, and dramatic without being grabby.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Mojo Rawley Vs CJ Parker

Pitched as a “showcase” when it was really a let-me-up. Good thing too, because it failed as the former. Mojo’s odd size (is he a big man or not?) a problem then as much as it is now. Juice Robinson unrecognisable from CJ Parker. Big 6 years.

It’s Gone.
Tag Team Titles: The Ascension (c) Vs Too Cool

Truly bizarre clash of ages and eras with Too Cool there as novelty mystery opponents. Ascension were all the way over, but 6 minutes felt like 10 due to in-ring limitations. Nostalgia couldn’t elevate it beyond just ok.

It’s Gone.
Women’s Title: Paige (c) Vs Emma

The best WWE-branded women’s match ever when it happened, the work holds up so well that it’d smash plenty of 2020 stuff too. Hard to recall either having many better singles matches and it earns sort-of cult status as a result.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Xavier Woods Vs Tyler Breeze

...doesn’t happen, because Alexander Rusev arrives and beats the shit out of them both. Accolade on Woods to stand tall, but this was too pedestrian to make the impact they wanted. Rusev was Strictly Just Alright for a long time, tbh.

It’s Gone.
Bo Dallas (c) Vs Adrian Neville

Such a tremendous and unique story that they’re loyal to throughout - Neville is an exponentially better wrestler than Dallas and they both know it, but Bo’s lucky and cagey. The ladder match was such an inspired gimmick choice.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
NXT Arrival Final Score:
- IT’S STILL GOOD: 3
- It’s Gone: 3

Will keep a running total of these as it goes along too. Up next, the first ever actual TakeOver!
NXT TakeOver
Full Sail University, Orlando, Florida

Adam Rose Vs Camacho

Tricky. You really, REALLY had to be there to understand how Adam Rose had any buzz let alone so much, but his debut and first few months played as a *magnificent* bit of extended silliness. Main roster bludgeoned it though, and the work’s bland.

It’s Gone.
Tag Team Titles: The Ascension (c) Vs Kalisto & El Local

What a blast. Ascension really peaking at this point. With the right guys, their brute strength heat segments were such a treat, and they worked with a confidence never once realised outside of NXT.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Sami Zayn Vs Tyler Breeze

Joyous continued growth for both. Breeze’s poise as a cocksure aggressor is mesmerising. Zayn works as both himself AND Cesaro from Arrival to try and learn from the loss, but still can’t crack it. Full Sail’s a FURNACE by the end.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Rusev Vs ???

Lana threw out a challenge to the NXT roster on Twitter earlier that day now that Rusev’s a main roster monster doing his Putin bullshit. Stomach sank when I remembered it was Mojo, but the one-sided beating he took was actually piss funny.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Women’s Title: Natalya Vs Charlotte

A star is born. Breakout night for Charlotte and surely Natalya’s best ever match. Second show in a row to boast the “best WWE-branded women’s match ever” and a masterclass in escalating heat, limb work and tangible emotion.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
NXT Title: Adrian Neville (c) Vs Tyson Kidd

Less flashy than you’d imagine but hugely gripping. Kidd staying clinical before getting overconfident was great. Neville teased it out of him too, mastering the balance of earnest underdog and shit hot pro wrestler.

IT’S STILL GOOD!

NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4 Way
Full Sail University, Orlando, Florida
September 11th 2014
Tag Team Titles:
The Ascension (c) Vs Lucha Dragons

Really drab until the closing stretch, which was only any good because Kalisto was in the fucking MOOD. Proper “Next Rey” vibes, though maybe that was because he was tagging with the last one to miss that mark.

It’s Gone.
CJ Parker Vs Baron Corbin

Parker demanded a match, Corbin’s already in the ring and it’s his debut proper. Cute red herring profiling Parker only for Corbin to flatten him with the then-unnamed End Of Days. Huge pop, “Thank You, Baron” chant, super effective.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Enzo Amore Vs Sylvester Lefort

Over is over and few got Full Sail louder than Enzo & Cass but Enzo singles matches weren’t the way to harness that. Not boring because Amore just pissed ludicrous charisma from every pore, but other than his win, this d r a g g e d.

It’s Gone.
Bull Dempsey Vs Mojo Rawley

As shite as it sounds, even if it was just a short squash win for Dempsey. They’ve established a proper “god, not this dickhead AGAIN” energy about Mojo every time the poor bastard comes out. Impossible to get OR stay hype when he pops up.

It’s Gone.
Women’s Title: Charlotte (c) Vs Bayley

Kicked fuckin’ ass, obvs. Both were still refining their acts, but their heel/babyface chemistry was sublime. Such an electric feel about the division at this point, especially when Sasha tried to jump Bayley afterwards.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
NXT Title: Adrian Neville Vs Tyson Kidd Vs Tyler Breeze Vs Sami Zayn

Gorgeously detailed. Zayn’s desperation brought the heft and seasoned a meaty action-packed banger. Heartbreak followed exhilaration, especially after Neville shithoused his way to the win.

CJ Parker Vs Kevin Owens

You know this one well. Owens turns the fucking place upside down the second he enters, his energy is frantic and DANGEROUS. KO’s legit broken nose intensifies the heat in a short but mesmerising match. He said it would be his night.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Tag Titles: The Lucha Dragons (c) Vs The Vaudevillains

This was more fun to look at than it was to watch. Champs had charm and the challengers were some way off hitting their ceiling, but both teams were This-Era NXT success stories for better and worse. Only fine.

It’s Gone.
Tye Dillinger Vs Baron Corbin

Can’t hate. The fans-count-along gimmick was absolutely fantastic, with Dillinger lasting just 41 seconds as Bull Dempsey looked on to build their stereo squashes feud.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
The Ascension Vs Hideo Itami & Finn Bálor

Pairing the hot imports BADLY backfires when The Demon’s debut is so spellbinding that it bludgeons Itami’s aura. They were a fucking ripper team, it’s still good, but by “it”, I mean Finn’s NXT push, not Hideo’s. Oops.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Women’s Title: Charlotte (c) Vs Sasha Banks

“Best WWE-branded women’s match ever” again. Mint mint mint, and another example of how the Horsewomen were elevating each other and the division. As good as every match they had years later. Better than several.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
NXT Title: Adrian Neville (c) Vs Sami Zayn

Every bit as epic and moving as the story deserved. Underpinned by mammoth stakes, the all-or-nothing vibe flowed through every punch, clutch and flip. Post-match just as special. Transcendent stuff from top to tail.

IT’S STILL GOOD!

NXT TakeOver: Rival
Full Sail University, Orlando, Florida
February 11th 2015
Tyler Breeze Vs Hideo Itami

HOT finish but a bit of a grind getting there. Breeze was such a perfect fit for the time, but this was a touch pedestrian. Still a bit of spark not quite recovered with Itami and everybody awkwardly kept dancing around that.

It’s Gone.
Baron Corbin Vs Bull Dempsey

Nah. Fought under No DQ rules but they barely used it. Corbin’s run has been a blast so far, but they should have stuck with the squash formula a little longer. This exposed both of them. Baron looked cool AF in the post-match, at least.

It’s Gone.
Tag Titles: Blake & Murphy (c) Vs The Lucha Dragons

Disappointing. Surprisingly sloppy and flat at the beginning and only marginally better by the end. Both teams were ostensibly babyfaces, but neither were that over. Even by 2015 standards, shockingly unmemorable.

It’s Gone.
Adrian Neville Vs Finn Bálor

The exact ripper you’d expect, coated in a two exquisitely told stories. Neville tries (unsuccessfully) to no-sell The Demon and both defend against the other going to the top rope. Exhausting near-falls cap off a proper classic.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Women’s Title: Charlotte (c) Vs Bayley Vs Becky Lynch Vs Sasha Banks

The Bret Hart moment for the Horsewomen - a lifetime of loyalty earned through blisteringly good work. One of the best 4-ways ever, Vince owes them a billion dollars each for paving this path.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
NXT Title: Sami Zayn (c) Vs Kevin Owens

The feud most emblematic of how the brand so rapidly garnered GOAT praise, this was a gutsy and devastating flex of the booking’s backbone. They don’t make ‘em like this now - and they’d win more Wednesdays if they did.

Tyler Breeze Vs Finn Bálor

Helped enormously by the love Full Sail had for both guys, but a little too easy to see past that on rewatch 5 years later. They went big for the finish by the stage, but even that felt a little...contained. Both had way better big matches.

It’s Gone.
Bayley & Charlotte Vs Dana Brooke & Emma

What a treat. Far from just an excuse to feature the faces, this made great use of Emma’s new heel gimmick as a last obstacle for Bayley. That pairing with Dana was so shrewd and got better. The Horsewomen are *over* AF.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Baron Corbin Vs Rhyno

More bore than gore but there was a lot to enjoy about Rhyno’s NXT utility run. He’s so over that most of this gets a far louder reaction than it would have otherwise. There’s just too much good wrestling to ever spend time watching it again.

It’s Gone.
Tag Titles: Blake & Murphy (c) Vs Enzo & Cass

5 seconds in and I’m ready to fight anybody that doesn’t think the Enzo/Cass/Carmella act wasn’t one of the best in company history. Average match made great by white hot babyfaces. Alexa Bliss breaks out here too.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Women’s Title: Sasha Banks (c) Vs Becky Lynch

This match kicks your fucking ass. Lynch babyfaces the fuck out of herself FOREVER against 2015’s best heel. Whole thing morphs from “this women’s division is good” to “WWE will revolve around all of this one day”.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
NXT Title: Kevin Owens (c) Vs Sami Zayn

This match kicks Sami Zayn’s fucking ass. Sublimely constructed, an injured Zayn has to batter KO before KO can get to the injury, and almost manages it. When it turns though, it never turns back. Owens is evil. Cauldron.

NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn

August 22nd 2015
Tyler Breeze Vs Jushin Liger

Beautiful flex of a booking. Presents an outside legend in a manner WWE never do, against a character that shouldn’t have even worked in opposition to it. The heat’s molten and rising, the work’s excellent, and the moments are real.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Tag Titles: Blake & Murphy (c) Vs The Vaudevillains

Basic but magic. A festival of impossible pops they all may never receive again, the reactions elevate this to an insane degree. And Blue Pants, man. There’s nothing quite like when a product can do no wrong.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Tye Dillinger Vs Apollo Crews

Apollo’s “wow, look at it here!” aesthetic on his in-ring debut was really irritating, and it’s jarring watching in 2020 how little anything with him has changed. Tye’s getting there, but the crowd flatlines out when he’s on the attack.

It’s Gone.
Baron Corbin Vs Samoa Joe

The exact moment the novelty of simply seeing Joe in NXT/WWE wore off. Great matches were desperately needed to recapture the excitement, but they wouldn’t start here. Corbin was exposed going long in a big venue too. Dull.

It’s Gone.
Women’s Title: Sasha Banks (c) Vs Bayley

Most important WWE match of the 2010s. The Hart/Austin WM13 moment for US women’s wrestling, changing everything in its wake. Violent, epic, cathartic. Tears for the Curtain Call.

Good? It’s a fucking masterpiece, mate.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
NXT Title: Finn Bálor Vs Kevin Owens

Brilliantly patient bit of business that works better out of context than in. They dealt with how tough it was to follow the semi-main, and crafted one of the better modern ladder fights in a bloated era for them.

Finn Bálor & Samoa Joe Vs Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder

The future Revival’s first TakeOver match offers a delicious sign of things to come, repeatedly keeping Finn in bother by working his knee. Fed wonderfully into the growing competitiveness between the faces.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Jason Jordan & Chad Gable Vs Baron Corbin & Rhyno

Chad Gable is crazy over and crazy good, and Jordan’s nearly there too. The heel win is a heartbreaker, but in the best way. The noise in this one man, dear god the noise. It’s PIERCING for Gable bell-to-bell.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Dana Brooke Vs Asuka

Holy FUCK, Asuka is HERE and absolutely nobody is ready for her from Day One. An impact player before they even lock up, this is a sublime introduction to the division’s new killer. Overconfident and overmatched Brooke was a right laugh.

IT’S STILL GOOD!
Apollo Crews Vs Tyler Breeze

Psychologically sound but what a bore. Crews and Breeze are like better Randy Ortons here - this was a proper wrestler’s wrestler match, but even the Full Sail diehards couldn’t be arsed with most of it.

It’s Gone.
Finn Bálor & Samoa Joe Vs Baron Corbin & Rhyno

Told two stories so well here. Joe measures then bottles his anger brilliantly, with a reminder that the face NXT Champion never gives in. The presentation could have been a tribute or a turn, and they chose right.
