Day 1 - Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

A perfect film to kick-off the marathon. Definitely a must watch for horror movie fans.

Eight out of ten hand scythes.
Day 2 - The Strangers: Prey at Night

I was down on this film the first time I watched it in 2018. It doesn't live up to the original for me but that soundtrack is AMAZING. As is the pool scene.

Seven out of ten creepy masks.
Day 3 - Motel Hell

Motel Hell is a one-of-a-kind film. Bikers, bands, swingers with a whip, and a young woman who’s really into older dudes. It has it all. Even John Ratzenberger!

Six out of ten smoked meat sticks.
Day 4 - Child’s Play (2019)

I had low expectations going in but I was pleasantly surprised by this. I liked what they did to modernize the story. It definitely got a few laughs out of me and a lot of “oh shit” at some gore sequences.

Seven out of ten Buddi 2 dolls.
Day 5 - The Loved Ones

I enjoyed this on a second watch as much as the first. Well-paced, great soundtrack, stunning shots, and one hell of a villain. Fuck you Lola Stone.

Eight of out ten homemade scrapbooks.
Day 6 - Triangle

The less you know going into this, the better. Overall I found this tedious to watch. It’s not a bad movie, I think the concept is pretty cool. I just had a poor experience watching. My Letterboxd review goes into more details.

Five out of ten CGI seagulls.
Day 7 - The Battery

This movie tested my patience. And while the music is good, it relies a lot on stretched out music montages to fill out the sparse story.

Three out of ten cans of tuna.
Day 8 - Children of the Corn

I remember this movie scaring me as a kid. Not as scary as I remember, aside for those special effects. But I'm here for creepy corn imagery, squeaky children preachers, and demonic corn fields. A fun watch overall.

Six out of ten child drawings.
Day 9 - Suspiria (2018)

As a huge fan of the original film, I appreciate the change with color palette. It’s visually stunning. The plot line with the old man to be unnecessary and makes the movie longer than it needs to be.

Six out of ten silver hooks.
Day 10 - Secret Window

A film I remember making me very angry the first time watching.

I did not get angry on a second viewing. The story has been told before (and will be told again) but I enjoy the setting and Johnny Depp’s acting.

Five out of ten manuscripts.
Day 11 - Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2

This is not good.

Three out of ten Blair Witch insulated coffee mugs.
Day 12 - Final Exam

A good ole college slasher. Nothing really new here to see, but I enjoy the thought of an empty campus with only a few students left finishing up exams. Really ups the creep factor!

Four out of ten "harmless" pranks.
Day 13 - Nocturne

As a kid who went to orchestra camp, I enjoyed this movie. It didn’t blow me away, everything is fairly standard, but something about the lead actress kept me drawn in. I hope to see more from Sydney Sweeney.

Six out of ten music theory notebooks.
Day 14 - WNUF Halloween Special

October Scare-A-Thon Day 14

What started as a fun nostalgic parody quickly turned stale as there were too many commercials. I appreciate what they tried to do, but as a watch overall I was bored.

Five out of ten local television commercials.
Day 15 - The Midnight Meat Train

Ultimately, this is a fun movie watch. It's dark and grimey, has good actors, and very unsettling. The CGI though is atrocious. There were also times it seemed like it didn't know what it wanted to be.

Six out of ten 2 a.m. train rides.
Day 16 - Night of the Demons

I love the setting of this movie and all the goofiness that entails. The FX makeup is amazing! If horror has taught me anything, it's not never trust the weird girl named Angela.

Seven out of ten tubes of pink lipstick.
Day 17 - Housewife

This movie has potential, but unfortunately I think it gets lost in (literal) translation. There's a few things I liked, but ultimately I felt I had a lot of unanswered questions and no drive to seek answers.

Five out of ten pieces of dollhouse furniture.
Day 18 - My Bloody Valentine (1981)

I like this movie a lot! The characters have more depth to them than most 80's slashers and the pacing is great. I love the kills and the mine setting is super spooky.

Seven out of ten heart shaped box of chocolates.
Day 19 - The Church

A gothic church, devil worshipers, Argento involvement, and a Goblin track? It should all add up to something I love. But it didn't. It felt too all over the place for me. It probably doesn't help that I was sleepy during my viewing.

Five out of ten frescos.
Day 20 - Resolution

As a fan of The Endless, I was excited to watch this. I enjoyed the story, where it went, and how it ties into The Endless. Overall, I'm a fan of Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson and eager to see more from them.

Seven out of ten pieces of outdated media.
Day 21 - Fright Night

I love this movie. It's a pure delight. But Evil Ed might be one of the most annoying characters ever.

Eight out of ten vials of holy water.
Day 22 - 47 Meters Down

47 Meters Down was not that good. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged was even worse. The shark looks terrible, though underwater cave diving sounds terrifying without a shark looming around.

Three out of ten expensive scuba masks sitting unprotected on a dock...
Day 23 - Willow Creek

Found footage monster movie with very slow build-up. The tent scene is effective and very tense and scary. But other than that, it takes a long time to get anywhere and ultimately doesn't deliver.

Four out of ten Bigfoot murals.
Day 24 - Overlord

This is a great movie. A Nazi war movie with a monster horror twist? What's not to love! I think it could be trimmed up a bit but ultimately it's great.

Seven out of ten serum filled syringes.
Day 25 - The Mutilator

A typical slasher with some great gore effects. Even better than the gore is that catchy intro theme song. It’s so great they use it at the end followed by an instrumental version. They really made use of that song!

Five out of ten missing battle axe’s.
Day 26 - Southbound

Anthology films are tricky to master. There’s always a segment or two that stands above the rest. Some of the ways they connect the stories lost me. Overall a solid anthology horror flick.

Seven out of ten old TV’s playing Carnival of Souls.
Day 27 - Digging Up the Marrow

I had zero expectations going into this and ended up having a great time with it. I love Ray Wise and respect Adam Green. I liked the concept, the execution, and the creature design.

Eight of our ten monsters.
Day 28 - City of the Living Dead

This movie made no sense. I knew that going in. It was hard to keep my interest while exhausted from a long day. Even though the plot is all over. the place, I love the special effects and set pieces.

Five out of ten psychiatry sessions.
Day 30 - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2

This movie was just as loud and uncomfortable as the original. But there was something I missed about the smaller scale. The larger budget resulted in it being over the top with more comedic moments.

Seven out of then french fry houses.
Day 30 - Crawl

As a native Texan, I've evacuated for a handful of hurricanes. The subject of a hurricane mixed with alligators kept me entertained. But the actors? Less so. The standout performance of this film is the dog, Sugar.

Six out of ten apex predators.
Day 31 - Killer Klowns from Outer Space

What a movie to end the movie marathon! This was silly, stupid fun. The set reminded me of a Goosebumps episode and I felt nostalgia for this film even though I've never seen it before.

Eight out of then cotton candy cocoons.
This concludes my #OctoberScareAThon tweets! Thank you to @TheJodyWebster for the phenomenal list which I only strayed from for two movies. And thank you @RobertHandlery for supporting me and watching a handful of these with me.
