Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst. Freud was born to Galician Jewish parents in the Moravian town of Freiberg, in the Austrian Empire.

Was married to Martha Bernays, who was the second daughter of Emmeline and Berman Bernays. Her paternal grandfather Isaac Bernays was a Chief Rabbi of Hamburg. Martha was the aunt of Edward Bernays pioneer of modern public relations & propaganda.

His best-known campaigns include the1929 effort to promote female smoking by branding cigarettes as feminist "Torches of Freedom", & work for the United Fruit Co in the 1950s, connected to the CIA-orchestrated overthrow of the democratically elected Guatemalan government in 1954.

He described the masses as irrational and subject to herd instinct, and outlined how skilled practitioners could use crowd psychology and psychoanalysis to control them in desirable ways. He worked for many US entities, inc Proctor & Gamble & General Electric.

Bernays touted the idea that the "masses" are driven by factors outside their conscious understanding, and that their minds can and should be manipulated by the capable few.

"Intelligent men must realize that propaganda is the modern instrument by which they can fight for productive ends and help to bring order out of chaos."

A little known fact is that Edward Bernays’ adored great nephew was the co-founder & CEO of Netflix, Mark Randolf.

Mr. Randolph went to Silicon Valley in the 1980s after growing up in Chappaqua, N.Y. His father, a nuclear engineer turned financial adviser. His mother ran her own real estate firm.

Marketing was in his blood. His great-uncle is Edward Bernays, a nephew of Sigmund Freud and a man often called “the father of public relations.” Bernays is Mr. Randolph’s middle name.
