tbh, i was skeptical when yeri added to red velvet on icc era, because she is just average singer, dancer, and rapper. her visual is so stunning, but we can agree irene is the prettiest in rv, but i believe there is a reason why yeri was added to rv. so don’t be mad yet.
yeri’s presence balances red velvet, vocally and in conceptual speaking, but i wanna talk about the vocal first. joy has the brightest vocal color in rv vocal spectrum, while irene, seulgi, and wendy are pretty round and mature. if you ever learned about how choir works, (c)
then joy is the one who stands out the most, in the bad way, because she can’t tweak her vocal color to be darker and thicker like irene, seulgi, and wendy. the way joy hits the high notes is kinda different than the others, she uses head voice a lot, rather than (c)
wendy who prefers to use her mix voice or seulgi/irene who does it nasally. this when, our underappreciated hero, kim yerim, saves the group vocal balance.
yeri’s tone is not as light as joy, but she is “the bridge” between joy and the other members.

in my milky way transcription, yeri was placed near with joy. she literally balances joy’s bright vocal with others. this transcription might be wrong tho, but you’ll get my point about her being the vocal bridge of rv’s secret ingredient of vocal harmony.
conceptly speaking, she also balances rv. rv insists of two concepts, red and velvet. irene and seulgi owns the velvet concept, wendy owns the red one, joy is the one who can rock both. but it’s still unbalance without another one person who completes wendy to fulfill (c)
