A thread of art advice, for me to remind myself of from time to time. 1/???.
No one is ever going to care as much about your art as you do. Until you learn that your own relationship with your art is the most important, you will never be entirely happy with it. 2/???.
Be mindful of chasing technical skill at the expense of growing your creativity, remember to play and have fun with art too. It's a language and you could understand it better than anyone in the world but that won't matter if you have nothing to say. 3/???
Reality is the greatest artist, sculptor, animator, look to it for your inspirations and ideas more than the interpretations that others make of it, lest you recycle something at the expense of originality. 4/???.
Glorifying a lack of exercise, sleep, a poor diet, and wrapping them up in ironic, self deprecating humour is such a dumb thing I encounter amongst artists online. Look after yourselves, please. 5/???.
You don't need to be the best artist in the world to be a successful one, as artists we start to compare ourselves to our peers (or worse, our idols), when they aren't even the ones who will hire you 99% of the time. Try not to lose your sense of perspective! 6/???.
The majority of artistic growth is going to be discovering things on your own and will come from creating. In the crucible surrounded by the flames of creation is where you'll find the impurities and the gold amongst your art and the knowledge you attempt to glean from it. 7/???.
Don't let your processes crush your intuition. The loss of intuitive drawing is the birth of a sterile image, keep the work fresh and full of trust in your own creative decision making. It will show. 8/???.
Check your frame of reference. When you compare yourself to your peers and idols, you will lose sight of how far you've come and grow disillusioned. You're still an artist, other people being good at their craft doesn't invalidate your work in any way. Celebrate it. 9/???.
Your internal pressures need release valves. With art the pressure to improve can be a great fuel for creative growth, but it can also be the cause of a meltdown. 10/???
Be honest with your art, the best work you make will be that which truly speaks to you as an artist. Your ideas, your handwriting, your message. 11/???
Have a passion project, something creative that you can revisit again and again over the long term. It builds cohesiveness and fosters long term artistic satisfaction and growth. 12/???
People generally don't care how much time you spent on an image. A 1-hour sketch can be better received than a 100-hour belaboured painting. The time invested in a single image is not a good measure of the quality of the finished work. Consider the best use of your time. 13/???
When considering your commission rates; in a race to the bottom, everybody drowns. 14/???
Sometimes you should stop worrying about whether something is accurate, believable, or technically correct and just ask instead 'But does it look damn good?' 15/???
Everyone learns how to make art differently, don't beat yourself up if you feel like a particular learning method isn't for you. Sometimes a creative problem requires a little bit of your own brand of thinking to solve it instead of relying on others or videos & textbooks 16/???
Perfectionism is the poison of artistic posterity. Knowing when to stop is as important as knowing when to push. 17/???
