Suicide prevention day is over. But while so many will only tweet about it one day a year - we should be looking out for the signs 365 days a year.

The signs someone might be suicidal... a short thread:
Not everyone shows suicidal behaviours. Some people who die by suicide don't show any signs.

So this isn't to say everyone who is suicidal will have these behaviours. And it definitely isn't to invalidate anyone's experiences.
But as there are signs some do show that you can look out for, I think it's important that people are aware of them.

1. Talking about dying or wanting to die.

2. Talking about feeling hopeless, empty and worthless.

3. Withdrawing from family and friends and isolating.
4. Giving away personal items.

5. Changes in sleeping patterns: sleeping too much, or not at all. Up all night and in bed all throughout the day.

6. Becoming emotionally distant.

7. Threatening to hurt themselves/self-harming.

8. Increasing alcohol intake or using drugs.
9. Searching for suicidal methods on the internet.

10. Extreme mood swings.

11. Acting completely out of character.

12. Behaving recklessly.

13. Showing more rage and feeling revegeful.

14. A drastic change in diet: eating too much or too little.
15. Losing/gaining an excessive amount of weight in a short time.

16. Talking about being a burden on others.

17. Having their mood change from despair to calm.

18. Saying they have no reason to go on living.
These aren't all the signs, and they don't always mean someone is suicidal. But you should definitely look out for them as they could be a warning.

Don't just 'check in on your friends', be proactive.

If you think someone might be suicidal, don't be afraid to ask them.
Be non-confrontational& non-judgemental, but be direct.

Stay calm, support them, acknowlege their feelings are valid, let them know help is available

If you think someone is in immediate danger, call 999, stay with them until help arrives, remove anything that could cause harm.
