Editors! If you insist on "data" being plural pls also use the singular in noun adjuncts, eg "datum set" & "datum science," to parallel "quantum theory" or "chicken soup" (never "quanta " or "chickens"). No? Well, lets go w/ the descriptivists to say it became singular in English

One of my favorite language pragmatists, B. Garner writes "data is a skunked term: whether you write data are or data is, you're likely to make some readers raise their eyebrows." So I guess the real question is, Whose eyebrows are you trying to lower / raise?

In short: it's likely unwise to correct others in either case. But do understand that an archaic and inconsistent pedantry about Latin declensions probably tells us more about your own status signalling and priorities than any genuine sense of observed language use.
