(1) If a project lead wants to hire you to "sound like this artist" just walk away from it.

You are you and if they are just looking at you as someone who can do the "XYZ" artist style at a discounted rate...then they already highly devaluing your work.
(2) A good lead knows what you are capable of and hires you for that reason and will work with your strengths. This work/creative relationship 9/10 will blossom and instead of having a "contractor" you will have a disciple.

Which 1 do you think will go the extra mile everytime?
(3) One last thing...
If a lead ever starts planting seeds in your head about your "competition" then you need to seriously re-evaluate working with them.

Embrace your "competition" as a friend because they are probably just like you and also have the scars to prove it.
