Photographer Jeff Katz worked closely with Prince to create the artwork for Sign O’ The Times. As Jeff shared with Vogue, the actual cover came from an organic, spontaneous moment the two of them shared.
"The shoot was pretty much over, and I had an apple box sitting in front of the camera. He just walked up to me with a smirk. He sat on it, put his face right up to my lens, and so I shot it. Without even seeing it, he laughed and said ‘that’s the cover.’"
In addition to the cover shoot that took place at Prince’s rehearsal warehouse in early 1987, Jeff also captured portraits of Prince at Paisley Park. Some of those striking images will be released for the first time in the Super Deluxe reissue of #PrinceSOTT.
"He taught me so much about how to think on my feet and create at a moment’s notice, how to make things happen organically," Jeff shared. "I’ve carried those lessons to each photoshoot that I’ve done since."
