watching Nancy Myers’ The Intern to manage anxiety
Robert De Niro understands that his job in this movie is to be an adorable elf, and he gives it everything he’s got. Also it’s a Nancy Myers movie so the kitchens are incredible
I have substantial objections to almost everything about this movie but it’s like a heroin croissant. Fine ok, you win, you beautiful monster
Robert De Niro repeatedly checking his email and never having any messages in his inbox is all part of the luxurious fantasy
There is a certain whiteness to the whole affair
De Niro looking out the window to see Hathaway’s chauffeur popping a breath mint—that my friends is called foreshadowing
Is this a paid internship? Is a question Nancy Myers would never ask herself. But damn this movie goes down smooth
Anne Hathaway really makes you feel the pain and humiliation when they tell her they want to bring in an outside CEO to run her startup
“Is it because I didn’t go to Harvard?” If we didn’t love you before, Anne Hathaway, we do now. But yes that is probably the reason
Chauffeur has a hip flask. The thick plottens
KITCHEN SCENE
Interesting how the shipping facility isn’t a technodickensian nightmare
When De Niro talks about being a former executive there’s a horrible moment where I thought she was gonna make him the CEO. But instead it’s touching when he reveals he used to work in this building for decades when it was a phone book factory
Jules helps him set up a Facebook account. That was in 2015; by now he’s drinking hydroxycholoroquinine with the Proud Boys
His favorite authors are Clancy, Ludlum, and Rowling. Let us draw a veil and move on
This whole heist scene to steal Hathaway’s mother’s laptop is so corny and I love it
Davis, pull it together man. Why does hapless young intern Davis look 100% identical to Jules’s unfaithful husband. Did they use a generic reference photo of “Brooklyn hipster”
This little speech of Hathaway’s at the bar manages to be sexist, ageist and anti-millennial. There were no racist incidents but that’s only because no Black people were allowed on set
De Niro’s romance with Rene Russo is fun, and the best part is there’s no hint of attraction between De Niro and Hathaway, even during the hotel sleepover
I recently saw a great thread somewhere about aromantic cross-gender friendships in movies and books and why they’re so wonderful and rare
