In 1942, the Sheikh met Nehru in Lahore. Nehru had the reports of split of MuslimConfrence and the Sheikh Abdullah leading the separated faction (NationalConfrence). While Nehru found NC's ideology compatible with that of @INCIndia (Congress),he embraced the Sheikh.1/n
#Kashmir
And the Sheikh on his part found support from a vast national political organization of much consequence coming almost without asking. He embraced it. Thus began the long but wistful camaraderie between the two, which ultimately gave new turn to #Kashmir politics. 2/n
Nehru's reckless support and patronization made the Sheikh secure against Hindu backlash from Jammu region. 3/n
In order to convince Nehru that his secular credentials were recognized by even the predominantly Hindu region of #Jammu, the Sheikh played the master stroke of raising voice for agrarian reforms... 4/n
Agrarian reforms formed the backbone of NC's #NayaKashmir manifesto. This was the handiwork of leftists who had been allowed entry into the NationalConfrence. 5/n
Part 2
Post Acession-

SheikhAbdullah was part of the Indian delegation to Lake Success. After this delegation, his aspiration of independent Sulatanate of #Kashmir began tormenting him deep inside (May be Americans, ISI, OIC must have contacted him in Lake Success). 6/n
Sheikh's attitude after his return from LakeSuccess gradually changed from pro-India to neutrality and then to independent Kashmir. He talked of special special status of #Kashmir, Muslim majority complexion of Kashmir and he talked of Kashmir as a distinct identity. 7/n
SheikhAbdullah's idiom changed with the change of location-- Srinagar, Jammu, NewDelhi. He become more and more defiant and dictatorial. 8/n
His patron-friend ( #Nehru) tried all he could to soften him and even went to the extent of signing an Accord with him in 1952 by virtue of which some clarification were made in regard to what powers the union had or had not over #Kashmir ...9/n
At this point of time, the Americans become more active in regard to #Kashmir tangle. Adlai Stevenson, the American ambassador in India and once runner up for Presidential post in US made private visit to the #SheikhAbdullah in Kashmir. 10/n
They met and talked in camera. SheikhAbdullah become more and more defiant of India.
In a public speech in RSPura in 1953, he openly gave call for secession from Indian Union. 11/n
In a public rally of 13 July,1953 in connection with the Martyr's Day (Black Day for Hindus), #SheikhAbdullah almost humiliated MaulanaAbulKalamAzad. 12/n
MaulanaAbulKalamAzad' senior @INCIndia leader and Union Education Minister, who was the guest of honour in that rally had to leave the stage without delivering the address. 13/n
On the night of 8-9 August 1853, SheikhAbdullah was arrested in Gumrah and removed from the office. BakshuGhulamMohammad, his lieutenant, was sworn in as the Prime Minister of J&K. 14/n
There were small disturbances on the arrest of SheikhAbdullah but Bakshi controlled the situation deftly. Kashmir saw the light after going through agonising darkness of eight years. 15/n
SheikhAbdullah's arrest was made when #Nehru was away in London attending Commonwealth Confrence and RafiAhmedKidwai was holding temporary charge of PM. 16/n
(The man fir whom Nehru suffered detention in Kohala some years ago was the same man who he put under arrest when he was the PM.) 17/n
While the #ShiekhAbdullah languished in the jail, his another lieutenant MirzaAfzalBeg launched Plebiscite Front with the agenda of deciding the future of #Kashmir through a plebiscite. 18/n
Apparently ShiekhAbdullah kept himself away from the PlebisciteFront, but actually a large number of his followers made common cause with pro-Pakistan elements and a network was spread throughout the length & breadth of Valley to sensitize majority population to pro-Pak line.19/n
It's pertinent to mention here that Plebiscite Front could not make much headway as long as Bakshi was in power. His ouster made space for Anti-National elements which NewDelhi was unable to control directly or indirectly. 20/n
GhulamMuhammadSadiq came to power in 1963 as the leader of Democratic National Confrence that had split from mainstream National Confrence led by BakshiGhulamMuhammad. Sadiq tried to win Congress by introducing it in state politics. 21/n
During the tenure of Sadiq's successor MirQasim, Plebiscite Front once again found revival either owing to overt patronage of the regime or through interaction of external forces that had begun to evince interest in Kashmir imbroglio. 22/n
In the armed uprising of 1989 and onwards, Plebiscite Front activists played significant role. 23/n
