Re: grad school & grind culture

Whatever you do, do it for you, and regularly check in with yourself to make sure that the effort+time are taking you where you want to go.

Give yourself the time to think about the path you’re charting for yourself.
If you make personal sacrifices, do it deliberately and not because you’re swept up in expectations, dept culture, or a manufactured sense of urgency.

Don’t let the system exploit you. Do it for you. And have a plan for when the system stops working for you.
PhD students may be figuring out the difference between learning to pass a course and growing to build a career; may be navigating new countries, new cities, friendships, love and heartbreak; definitely figuring out who they are.

Give yourself and others the space to do that.
A part of this stage in your life may involve figuring out what your “A game” looks like, and what you need to feel valued.

If you work/feel better w naps or long breaks, do that. Let your demeanor + “results” (however measured) speak for themselves.
Surround yourself (irl/online) with people who are excited about your potential and eager to help you grow, and not those who’re counting your hours or measuring you on the last thing you did. The latter are—sadly, maddeningly—everywhere; seek ways to invalidate their judgment.
Bonus points for the fellas & the white folks & native EN speakers: if you notice that some of your peers are given less slack or judged more harshly than you, advocate for them & let people know how awesome they are. Uplifting others costs you nothing.
