My view on this:

Five vital characteristics of the Student Movement were (1) the “question of nationalities” (a popular term for the 1960s struggle against ethno-linguistic domination in Ethiopia, famously referred to as Ye Biher Bihereseb Tiyaque in the Amharic language) 1/ https://twitter.com/mulugettayacob/status/1305126075123601409
(2) the “land question” (in Amharic known as Ye Meriyet Tiyaque “Land to the Tiller” (3) call for a Republic “Hizbawi Mengist’ (4) unquestioning embrace of Marxist-Leninist ideology, (4) high commitment to public service, all benefited peoples of Ethiopia established republic 2/
(5) extreme intolerance to any form of dissent. These led to use of state monopoly of violence and power without restraint and economy. When confronted with opposition groups demanding freedom, they replied by force and thus built sophisticated structures of extreme violence. 3/
With no tolerance whatsoever for differences of opinion or opposition, one group had to annihilate the other to establish a state and impose its own will on all others. To be sure, there was state violence before but not unrestrained and nihilist devoid of fear of any thing. 4/
Violence of a (Stalinist) kind that was alien to Ethiopia was introduced by the generation of that era, and in turn that generation became incapacitated by terror. The last character permitted and in some cases encouraged for self-serving leaders. 5/
who dare to use sheer force to stay in power at any cost. Leaders of this generation also unashamedly stole the sincere ideals of progressive members of the generation of the 1960s and 1970s,mainly those from leftist groups, and abused the struggles for their own personal gain END
