Why do people defend abolishing ‘Work Hard Be Nice’ for kids?

KIPP did NOT reform their motto to ‘Work Hard Be Kind’ as if the Michaela motto is somehow better.

They also abandoned the ‘Work Hard’ bit of their motto!

We think ‘being nice’ is docility. But... THREAD 👇🏼1/4
Docility happens when one is ignorant and uneducated, when one hasn’t ‘worked hard’.

Without knowledge, one becomes fodder for the machine.

Yet we applaud KIPP for abandoning the ambition that all their kids, whatever their colour, should work hard. 2/4
What is the opposite of being nice?

Slamming heads into the wall, bullying, stealing lunch money, telling teacher to F off, slamming desks, shouting, running and terrorising kids.

All commonplace in schools with challenging intakes

Yet we argue that being nice is docile 3/4🤨
We need to wake up to the reality of schools with challenging intakes.

We should care about the type of people these kids become, not just pass exams.

Learning to be nice is a crucial part of their education.

It is NOT racist to expect kids to be nice to each other! 4/4
