My story about becoming an atheist: A Thread

Growing up catholic I went to church and Sunday school every week. I took it seriously and evening served as an alter boy for awhile.

From that I got a moral code that I have always held myself too because I thought there was a “right” way to be.
As I got older I started to click into the world because I was always curious about how things work. I looked into religion and found there were more than just “Catholics and Protestants” and started trying to understand other faiths.

I began to feel guilty about questioning what I “knew”. I don’t recall the exact time, but I remember the argument I made to myself:
If God made me with the ability to reason and that reason led me to question my faith, then it would not be fair for them to judge me for using the abilities I was given. If you build a car without a steering wheel: you can’t fault it when it fails to make a turn.
I have been learning as much as I can about everything I can, and I simply found myself in a place where those mild ideas were just lost among what I have seen and experienced with my own eyes.
That said, I still have those moral standards. Other the years I wanted to be “good” so in the absence of rules to follow, I ended up internalizing my own set of rules. To this day I struggle to feel “good enough” based entirely on what I do to myself.
Growing up religious has consequences.

Take care of yourselves folks.
Take care of each other. 💙
