Here’s how empathy works. When there are opposing views, try imagining yourself in the other person’s shoes.

For example, would you like to have your neck knelt on until you died simply because of the colour of your skin? No? Then maybe Black Lives Matter has a point.
Here’s another one to try at home. Would you like to be denied basic human rights simply because of the gender of the consenting adult you happen to be in love with? No? Then maybe those fighting for LGBTQ rights have a point.
Or how about this one? Imagine you were raped by your father and are now pregnant with his child. Would you like to be forced to go through with the pregnancy and give birth to your abuser’s child? No? Then maybe advocates of pro-choice have a point.
Or how about this? Imagine fleeing a genocide with your child, spending everything you have left in the world to buy passage on an unsafe boat across the Med. It sinks. Your child drowns. You are described as a ‘cockroach’ by The Sun. Maybe migrants seeking safety have a point.
Finally, try this:

You’re rich, white, able-bodied, heterosexual and male, and live in a society in which no one opposes you and all laws work in your favour. Do you acknowledge this privilege and try to help others less fortunate than you? No? Then maybe you’re a psychopath.
