yesterday's listening session at Mental Health Hour Cebu left us with three key takeaways. these insights/re-realizations also served as gentle reminders for everyone. allow me to share them now (as a way for me to also process/reflect on things):
1. identifying what we can control and letting go of what we can't

when people around us and our circumstances are a whirlwind, and these are beyond our control, one way to stay sane is to go back to parts of us we have neglected while trying to take care of others.
what can we do at the present moment to breathe? are there tasks aligned with our personal goals that we can continue and/or focus on? we can get too caught up in certain situations that we forget to walk our own lane.
2. boundaries

as if saying "No" isn't difficult enough without feeling guilty about it, it's harder to maintain our boundaries around people who continue to disrespect them. but self-care is NOT selfish.
we teach others how to treat us by being consistent about the things we tolerate.
3. fear of becoming who we don't want to be

fear is a teacher. it brings our attention to parts of us that have some growing to do. and in order to grow through them we need to feel the things that demand to be felt, face the mirror, brave through our flaws...
...and be compassionate in holding ourselves accountable. without it we would act out our fears subconsciously.
Ah, the things we learn, unlearn, and relearn while listening and being listened to. I hope we get to cultivate safe spaces in our day-to-day life.
