đŸ§” While Labour have made huge strides in winning back public trust over the last 6 months, it’s next step has to be tackling social media.

Here’s why ...
In 2015 Labour social media exploded. Every branch, CLP, affiliated group had their own twitter account.

With no accountability and often no scrutiny they became a kind of echo chamber, sharing and RTing the same issues & articles.
As the divisions between Corbyn’s supporters and the rest of the party grew, many people became active on FB Groups.

These groups became over more cultish. Increasingly members were being fed on a diet of conspiracy, grievance and of course, AntiSemitism.
As others have noted, the opportunity cost of supporting Corbyn became denying AntiSemitism in Labour.

But it was also “comrades” posting 72 articles on Palestine our local CLP FB Group for every one on the NHS.

It affectively normalised Left Antisemitism.
Perhaps Formby thought by disassociating the Party from “Labour” FB Groups would help protect the party’s reputation. It hasn’t.

It’s just allowed toxic groups to use social media to promote their own fringe ideas, only with the Labour name.
This is a perfect example. A number of BAME Labour members asked who was running this account. I also tweeted the account, and got blocked.

It seems odd that Labour account should be tweeting anti Starmer articles. Or one called #BLM that only tweets the JVL.
But moving on from accountability & loss of reputation, this unregulated use of “Labour” meant Labour effectively handed over a huge advantage to the Tories.

As recognised in the Labour Together report, Labour were talking to themselves, the Tories were talking to the country.
There doesn’t seem to be any understanding about how to use social media as a way of getting your message out, reaching new voters, broadening support.

Although the constant mix messaging after the 2017 election onwards didn’t help (Labour Together).
On many occasions Labour social media was loudest when arguing about an internal matter.

It’s not surprising voters switched off. Labour spend 4 years amplifying their own ideological battles.
