did bts really paved the way?
first of all let's understand the meaning of "pave the way"
paving the way means to create a situation that makes it possible or easier for something to happen.
paving the way DOES NOT mean doing it first.
bts never had it easy since they debuted. they struggled financially, they were cut out of broadcasts and were bashed by other kpop idols.
so when did that change?
in 2017. when bts released dna and mic drop. it helped them gain a lot of popularity in western media.

dna was the first kpop song to make it to the billboard hot100 chart

mic drop and dna also became the first kpop songs to be certified gold by the RIAA.
after that they were invited to the bbmas and became the first kpop group to be invited to the show. and they won their first award in america.
then they attended the AMAs, again, the first korean act to do so. and this time they performed dna and also stayed in the states for a longer time to promote it.
they were all over the western media. in every talk show. all over the internet. and that's how they gained fans so fast
some people say that 2nd gen groups paved the way for bts.but how? if 2nd gen artists really paved the way for kpop idols wouldn't every group have been this big?
after 2017, their popularity only grew. they performed fake love and bwl at the bbmas and won top social award again.
even their mvs were doing better than a lot of western artists, their songs were on the top of the charts, they even received the order of the cultural merit by-
the president.

their album love yourself: tear became the first kpop album to reach #1 on the billboard 200, and first foreign language album since 2006.
fake love debuted at #10 on billboard hot 100, making bts the first kpop group to ever achieve that.
a week after love yourself: tear dropped, it reached #1 on the billboard artist 100 chart

even love yourself: answer went #1 on billboard 200, and then map of the soul: persona became their 3rd album to earn the number 1 spot.
they are the first group to achieve this after the-
beatles.

they also became the first asian artist to surpass five billion streams on Spotify and had the most streamed kpop song on spotify, played almost 285 million times.
they went on stadium tours, attended the grammy's two years in a row, even performed as a guest act, and also became the first korean act to present at the grammy's, had the best selling album in 2019, spoke at the UN, won daesangs.
they were still getting more and more popular in usa and making headlines everyday.

those headlines generally had the sentences along the lines of, "bts is the first kpop group" or "bts is the first group" so that clearly means that nobody had achieved what bts did.
so now bts gained millions of fans and those fans became more curious about kpop, they started asking what more artists they should listen to and things like that.
bts' fanbase grew day by day and boom kpop became huge. which made other groups like, blackpick, exo, got7, twice, etc gain more fans.
and i'm pretty sure those fans didn't know about the 2nd gen groups.
it all started in 2017, when bts became popularity worldwide, kpop also did. i don't think that's a coincidence.
but now imagine if bts never released dna, or they never stepped in america? do you really think kpop would've been this big? i'm certain it wouldn't have.
this is just common sense and whoever disagrees with it has to be a bts anti.
even the kpop idols whom you claim have paved the way, talked about how bts made it easier for them.
all the naive kpop stans see what bts have done for kpop but they refuse to acknowledge it.
i'm sure a few people who claim that bts didn't pave the way have found out about kpop through bts.
now when you see other kpop groups on american talk shows you don't even take a double look because bts has normalised it.

even the vmas have an award category for 'best kpop'. which bts won btw.
while we're at it let's talk about dynamite's achievements
it broke the record for the most viewed music video within 24 hours crossing 100 million views.
set a new spotify record by debuting at #1
#1 on billboard hot 100 2 weeks in a row, first korean act to ever achieve that.
i don't have anything against any other kpop group. i'm sure they're happy that they're finally getting the recognition they deserve after so much hardwork. i'm not discrediting them but bts has made the path easier for them and are a big reason for kpop becoming this huge.
so yeah, bts did pave the way.
