Hockey Thoughts - What to do about Chris Tanev edition.
For this thread I'm going to look at right side D that kill penalties and are likely to cost less than $4M per year. Data are my sloppy attempt to summarize and interpret some of @IneffectiveMath's xG results. Stay tuned...
The incumbent: Chris Tanev.
I love what he's brought to the team but somewhere around 2016 he started to lose his fastball. At this point, he's probably a depth defender on this team. Maybe a new team revitalizes him. I hope he succeeds wherever he ends up.
Option 1: MacKenzie Weegar
If you've heard me speak on this before, you probably could have guessed this. I think he's the best fit given cost (contract, Florida's cap problems) and the need to fill a Tanev-sized hole on the right side.
Option 2: Patrik Nemeth
To some extent I'm ignoring DeMelo (good, lots of teams bidding?) and others in favour of an island of misfit toys approach, because I suspect that's where the value lies. Nemeth is a good defensive defenseman on a terrible team.
Option 3: Matt Roy
I don't think he's available because LA has the same issue on the right side as Vancouver. Still, he's an intriguing player and I do what I want.
Option 4: Ilya Lyubushkin
He doesn't kill penalties. He doesn't put up points, in any pro-league, at all. He plays fewer minutes than the others. He's still a question mark. I put him here as he's the Nate Schmidt option, where perhaps there's a player that's miscast.
The field: DeMelo (good results this year, so-so track record), Hamonic (probably too much money for ES results, elite PK), Brodie (probably costs more than Tanev, otherwise a good option), Pietrangelo (🤣), Stecher (is listed so I can say he was better than Tanev this season).
