One of the reasons I’ve pursued a career in supporting students to succeed is when I was diagnosed with a serious lifelong condition & sought support, I was told “you’re never going to get better, I don’t think you should continue”. sentence crushed me & was enough to lead me to apply to another uni; it reinforced I wasn’t welcome here. But I came back fighting; found better support, graduated with a 1st & became a student rep to fight for others like me. I’m glad we’re making strides in accessibility (2/4)
but we have a duty to ensure we continue to move forward. New challenges are arising due to Covid & we need to ensure all students have the opportunity to thrive & succeed. Accessibility & inclusivity need to be front & centre, not afterthoughts or regulatory constraints. (3/4)
Lifting the platform is not giving some students an advantage, it’s removing systemic disadvantage & all of us in HE have a vital role in making education more equitable. Education is transformative for individuals & communities only when it’s accessible to all. We can do better.
