(A very short thread) (1) The most concerning thing about reading the Boris #HumanRights thread is the lack of understanding of the HRA and the ECHR. The ECHR is not an EU document. It was a commitment to stop a recurrence of fascism and the spread of Stalinism.
(2) It was Winston Churchill, François Mitterrand and Konrad Adenauer along with Bishops, business owners, trade unionists and academics who came together and asked for a charter of rights to provide universal protection. A large part of the drafting came from a Brit.
(3) The Grandfather of #HumanRights in Europe was David Patrick Maxwell Fyfe, 1st Earl of Kilmuir. A Conservative politician, an Attorney General and a prosecutor at Nuremberg. The ECHR is a British led international human rights instrument.
(4) To proclaim that Boris is sticking it to the EU by attacking #HumanRights is legally and historically incorrect. The ECHR has been used to protect the rights of our soldiers, disabled children in our schools and the elderly in our care homes.
