THREAD: Netflix really did the dirty on Maimouna Doucoure in they way they've marketed Cuties. They knew what they were doing and the ire THEIR depiction would draw.
Now the screaming and outrage from the wilfully ignorant is all one hears about this powerful film...
A film about a second generation child caught between a conservative and religious home culture and the freedom and liberty of French life. I can relate, growing up in a strict Caribbean home while my white friends occupied a very different, relaxed culture...
I recognise the trauma of childhood naivety living inside a pubescent body with hormones working overtime to transition from child to teen. I was 11 when my periods started too, body hair in place, trying to be a child but forced into adulthood by a difficult home environment...
My white friends were clueless of the demands on second gen children in working class homes, harder for those whose parents had English as a second language. My black and brown friends still talk about the impact of this today...
From the age of 8 to 11 I went to dance school. The serious 'dance mums' sent their girls into competitions fully loaded - make-up, glitter, form fitting outfits - slightly different to the styles in this film, biggest difference: race and class...
The people complaining about Cuties haven't watched it, have no idea of the story it's telling. They literally think it's about a troupe of 11 y.o twerkers, for fucks sake, thanks to Netflix's adverts...
Mostly Americans screaming. The same people who support pageant culture, dressing up 6 y.o as mini, coquettish Dolly Partons for money. If they watched Cuties they'd probably use the awful US dubbing instead of the original French with subtitles, losing even more of the point...
The same people whose 11 y.o children are using apps to transform their faces and bodies to look like Kardashians, and are up to all sorts over on TikTok...
Cuties is a powerful film about an important dichotomoy facing working class/poor children of multiple cultures, and how that frustration and desire to belong manifests itself. Watch it, you might learn something.
