some reasons I really like the cassunzel ship
(This is without mentioning individual examples of in-series moments/scenes that are very romantic - that would be a very long list.)
1) The notion of 'opposites attract': their personalities balance each other well. Some parts are complimentary and some are conflicting, which leads to them having to find compromises. They can bring out the best in each other during good times, and the worst during bad times.
2) They both act as the other's freedom - Cassandra quite literally for Rapunzel, who takes her on adventures; but Rapunzel metaphorically for Cassandra, as she pulls Cassandra out of her shell and makes her more fully able to enjoy life.
3) The complicated relationship between them as one is a princess and the other is her servant/knight, and all the angst that comes from that - especially Cassandra wanting to protect Rapunzel just from caring about her, but distressed by a class divide Rapunzel is oblivious to.
4) Complimentary sun and moon imagery evident not only with the sundrop/moonstone but in everything about their designs - even their animal companions (a chameleon, cold-blooded and depends on the sun; an owl, active and hunts at night).
5) They were both socially underdeveloped and had to learn interpersonal skills with each other, since they were each others' first/second close friend,
So they were at the same level socially when they first met - unlike Rapunzel with most others, since she was trapped for so long. They grew together.
6) Rapunzel comes across the entire series as crushing really hard on Cassandra without realizing it (with Cassandra not noticing because she's so emotionally repressed - but returning the feelings, as Rapunzel is one of the only people Cassandra cares about).
7) Numerous times the series makes it apparent that one of the most important things to Rapunzel is Cassandra's happiness - to the point that fake Cassandra saying she was happy there was almost enough for Rapunzel to decide to stay in Zhan Tiri's servant's dream world.
(An aside: This could be a reason we don't see Rapunzel desperately seeking Cassandra early season 3 - she thinks Cassandra is better off and happier away from her, since Cassandra was so upset with Rapunzel before taking off, and Rapunzel doesn't want to interfere with that.)
8) The fact that Rapunzel now has two versions of arguably her happiest memory - when she first left the tower and experienced the outside world - and one of them is with Cassandra.
9) They were human hosts to two halves of a celestial power that desperately yearned to be reunited, that belonged together.
10) The entire series holds the arc of the moonstone and sundrop seeking to be reunited: the series begins with Rapunzel and Cassandra reawakening those powers, and ends with both the two powers and Rapunzel and Cassandra being reunited. The series is their story, together.
11) Besides how they literally become human hosts to the sundrop and moonstone, both embody traits of the sundrop/moonstone as part of their personalities:
- Rapunzel has a sunny demeanor and looks to help people, to the point she's willing to sacrifice herself for others (the sundrop just let itself get picked and turned into an elixir!). She rehabilitates people and gets them on track to live their best lives - a kind of healing.
- Cassandra has a reserved and brooding demeanor and tends towards isolation, putting up walls, and lashing out at people when she feels uncomfortable or upset. She focuses on protecting herself and those close to her.
12) They just straight up replaced Eugene with Cassandra when recreating/paralleling scenes from the original movie - in one instance making it more romantic - and that is hilarious to me.
(This scene is a reversal of the original Tangled movie - Rapunzel's tear landing on Cassandra doesn't bring her back to life, so instead she fights and risks her own life to be able to use the healing spell.)
13) They were both at their most miserable (as long-term emotional distress, not individual moments) when they were in conflict with each other.
14) This (another example not shown: in the mine when they were joking about worse trials they'd overcome together, and then when they escape the giant mole by working together) https://twitter.com/tangledtxtposts/status/1303498220375474176
15) They constantly exchange looks with each other when other people are talking because they know what the other is thinking.
16) The dozens of romantic moments between the two of them over the course of the series.
That's what I've got for now but there is undoubtedly more if I continue to think about it. I love these two so damn much
