People choosing Urdu as optional in UPSC have overall highest success rate over years. There can be 2 reasons for this.
One, papers of Urdu are evaluated at AMU, Jamia by those who know which group takes Urdu.
Two, it is just a vague script where even spelling is secondary.+
In fact when you write by hand, it is all about weirdly placed dots and strokes often missed in hurry. There are no vowels. Unlike Indian languages that are phonetic or English that has standardized spelling and alphabets. That is why Urdu and science don't go together. +
The current UPSC selection process seems unscientific and irrational. Why do we need Civil servants to mug Anthropology or write ghaseeta urdu?
The exam must be transformed into an objective evaluation with focus on aptitude. Rest of memory stuff can be taught during training.
