Every single year I’ve taught, there is at least one student in my class who believes Black lives don’t actually matter. 1/5
That means for 6 years, I have had to justify my humanity and the humanity of every Black person to teenagers while respecting their humanity, nourishing their curiosity, showing them compassion they wouldn’t show my kin, and reminding myself they’re kids. 2/4

because that’s not a given.
