Music is one of the biggest industries in the world and for a very good reason. with the rise of technology and streaming services it’s really easy to push out music and become an artist without ties in the music industry. there are many independent artists in music these days.
now with all that music there are bound to be gems yet there’s also some pretty bad music too. Music is very subjective yet most can come to an agreement on who’s great and who isn’t. yet what makes an artist good? that’s what i’ll try to tackle today in this thread
1. What does it mean for an artist to Good?
When an Artist is considered Good. it means they can consistently drop above average projects and maybe even win a couple grammys. Some great examples are Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, and Frank Ocean.

If you ask most rap fans or just music fans they will tell you that these people are great at what they do. which is making music. whether they make easily digestible music or music that makes you think about certain things. Their albums are critically acclaimed and loved by fans
These 3 have all dropped an Album Of The Decade contender. Frank Ocean with Blond, Kendrick Lamar with To Pimp A Butterfly and Good Kid, m.a.A.d City, and Kanye West with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. All albums loved by music critics and fans across the music world alike.
Now What makes these albums good? What makes the artists behind them good. I will use these albums as my examples for what makes an artist (and even an album from a bad artist) good
1. Production
Arguably the most important thing in an album other than the Vocals. Production must be top tier in order to be considered a legendary album. We will be using My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy as an example for production

When an Artist makes an album the first thing that stands out is the production they choose to use. the production can easily make or break an albums quality. The first track off of MBDTF is a grand opening with Dark Fantasy. When you hear the song you know your in a ride
It sounds almost majestic with the pianos and other instruments used for the beat on Dark Fantasy. Then we get a sort of a tone switch with the next track Gorgeous into a calmer sort of production with the same guitar riff playing over and over again.
What makes this good is that it’s a easy song to listen to. It doesn’t make it super abrasive and it just sounds great even with no vocals. If a song or artist has bad production it’s not worth a listen. It’s ok to have laid back production but our next example is nothing calm
When POWER comes on you know that this is gonna be a grand song because of the vocals and clapping at the beginning. Once kanye comes in and we get to the chorus everything starts a rise as we have the drums come in and a guitar part that makes the listener feels god like.
