I wonder if 2020s will be the decade of cheese in ESC. Like, 80s was a decade of cheesy and OTT both winners and entries in general. Like, just 1984-1986 (plus 1981) winners series was like a great slice of 80s bubblegum pop.
Then the 90s came and it was like a revolt against the cheese in the 80s.
91 was the last case of 80s bubblegum pop song winning. Then, it was all Americanised ballads, Celtic pop like Enya, ethnnopop, with occasional steps to modern music. Like, no cheese at all.

Then came the 00s with a bunch of new countries and then the 90s minimalism was gone. Then it was about cheese and OTT again and the countries like Ireland and UK that were doing well in the 90s suddenly started struggling again.
And then came the 2010s and it was a revolt against the cheese in the 00s, especially as the juries came into picture. 2010s was about modern radio pop and power ballads with strong message. The contest gained bigger mainstream attention.
So by this logic, the 2020s should be a cheesier decade again, with OTT and camp songs/performances having bigger chance again? We’ll just have to wait and see, I guess...
