I’ve been thinking a lot over the last few days about Woodward’s defense over not releasing the tapes with Trump about coronavirus sooner. And the fact that it boils down to a favorite line of mine — “Trump says a lot of things” — makes me sympathetic to it
It’s wild that with the leader of the US, you have to treat him like Putin and take into account the fact that everything he says could be a lie or spin. What’s disappointing, then, is that Woodward apparently doesn’t spell that out in the book
Like okay. You don’t know if Trump is just talking when he says coronavirus is hella deadly in February. You also don’t know what to make of his comments in March. Why not say in your manuscript “I could never tell when he was lying to me — and that was horrifying to realize.”
It’s like how people still can’t see that if you ask him “do you think you should do X” or “are you doing Y” and he says “we’re looking into it” or “we’re considering it” it’s usually just him...saying words. I would bet hard money he usually has no clue what’s even being asked
If you’re out here still trying to take each and every declaration or pronunciation from Trump without a super-sized Maldon flake of salt, I don’t know what to tell you. And if you know that and don’t make it clear to readers? God help you.
