Peace in Ireland is based on “ever closer union” within the EU: of NI with the Republic, and of the Republic with the UK. That promise allowed anyone on the island of Ireland to believe in a future of peaceful union, if they wished to. /1
Some could believe that reunification would peacefully come to pass one day. Others could trust that if reunification did happen, a united Ireland would be bound to the UK within the EU, and so they would not be abandoned. It was a delicate balance, an act of faith and trust. /2
Brexit blows that apart. Destroys it, unilaterally, for a dream of British sovereignty. Borders, trade, economy: these are all side-issues and distractions. There is no border solution that gets round the fact that NI is being ripped away from the Republic against its will. /3
The basis for peace was destroyed by a state that is transforming itself into a pariah, which has shown time and again that it doesn’t care about the risk to Irish and British lives. Now all we can do is wait for the sad inevitable. https://twitter.com/brexitbin/status/1304786550698512386?s=12
