Pretty good thread on diversity in comics. I'd add that there was probably as big, if not bigger backlash to those characters then.

Hell, in 1956, EC's Judgment Day, whose twist was the main character was revealed to be black, was almost banned by the Comics Code. https://twitter.com/cheryllynneaton/status/1304788091752808449
And that effectively killed off EC Comics when Bill Gaines realized that the Code was just that bullshit.
