Oh no, here we go (again) https://twitter.com/AllieHBNews/status/1304884902173736960
The article is hopelessly confused - talk about 'opting out' of Human Rights Act. I assume it means opting out of parts of European Convention on Human Rights. Lots to say about this but difficult to make sense without seeing actual proposals rather than garbled Telegraph balloon
We have been here a number of times before, including the deliberate confusion between the Human Rights Act (which is a domestic - local - UK law) and the European Convention on Human Rights. The target is undoubtedly the ECHR, but no mandate to pull out in part/full...
... based on manifesto commitments as it only mentioned the Human Rights Act. So would have to be voted on by parliament including Lords and that is a huge fight govt may not win. The UK was instrumental in drafting the ECHR and convincing the rest of Europe to sign up to it...
This has always been Dominic Cummings' plan by the way. Whether he will achieve it, well that depends on how serious it is (as opposed to culture war/negotiating gambit) https://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/politics/after-brexit-they-will-come-for-human-rights-and-this-time-the-public-debate-must-be-won
Also, all a good culture war distraction from the disastrous pandemic isn’t it? Particularly helpful if the leader of the opposition outs himself as a soft liberal Islington former human rights lawyer rather than the competent-seeming PM in waiting. Doubt he will fall for it
As if to prove a point, look what’s right in the middle of this article! It’s Kier, right there in the Sunday Telegraph!
