I do think Austin Comedy will survive but I think it’s important remember that Austin never had a comedic talent or audience problem. We have an industry problem. We don’t have a ton (any?) booking agents, tour managers, and marketing folks. Only the theaters.
Austin has this problem in general, but music, real theater, and dance at least have independent people that are willing film shows and write about them.
That is why someone like Dusty is so important. We need more Dustys, don’t tell him I’m saying this, someone doesn’t perform but loves comedy. Comedy Wham is another example. Comics also have to treat these people with respect. You need them more than they need you.
Running a theater that does/did two to four shows seven nights a week. I can tell you that a great tech and showrunner is worth ten great comics. Because I’ve seen great comics put on really bad shows.
So if this time has maybe made you reconsider your love or willingness to put in the effort to be a good performer but you still love comedy. Consider you might actually be great at some else and can still be around the thing you love. We need you.
