I got an email from the Indivisible group today, with their explanation of why they support the Defund the Police movement.
The email contained so much BS that I felt I should do a point-by-point rebuttal.

1) "The history of policing in this country began as a way to preserve the slavery in the South..." No. Most historians state that cities in northern free states created the first police forces to deal w/urbanization crime issues. Rural Southern slave patrols had no such duties.
1b) Even some lefty historians emphasize that the rural Southern slave patrols and the urban Northern police forces were different entities with different purposes: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/the-origins-of-policing-in-the-united-states/
2) Again, no. The defund/abolish police movements don't mean reform the police. They literally mean "defund & abolish the police" & have since their origin with 1970s Marxists. Some proponents pretend otherwise as they know Defund/Abolish is political poison; others are honest.
2a) Here's an honest lefty telling us straight up that Defund means Defund and Abolish means Abolish: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/12/opinion/sunday/floyd-abolish-defund-police.html
2b) Why the word games? Because despite what its proponents imply or claim, Defund & Abolish is NOT popular with most people of color. At all.
Most Black Americans not only want police, many want to see *more* of them. They want reform, not abolition. https://www.newsweek.com/81-black-americans-dont-want-less-police-presence-despite-protestssome-want-more-cops-poll-1523093

3) If we know that most Black Americans oppose defunding and abolishing the police, we know why the D&A supporting groups are playing a motte-and-bailey word game here:

The "Bailey" is the position its advocates really want but which most oppose. The "Motte" is the position they pretend to have when they get too much heat for expressing their real position:
And that is that.
