Many of us in the youth sports world have had a zillion zoom meet ups about using the pandemic to re-balance youth sports and increase access and equity. Meanwhile...IRL...

- clubs are cancelling their rec programs while continuing their select programs.
- college coaches...1/6
are recruiting as if everyone is playing when most of the kids playing are on teams breaking rules or paying to fly to other states.
- people are starting private sports academies beholden to no one while school sports & parks & rec are closed.
- colleges are cutting...2/6
some of the most accessible sports while also risking health & safety of athletes to make a buck.
- virtual school means no (or minimal) PE & recess leaving many kids with 0 access to sport & play
- most funders don’t care about the scope & systemic nature of this problem....3/6
and think it will be solved by handing out scholarships.

Our Zoom calls are not stopping youth sports from being hijacked & the accessibility gap widened.

We need a coordinated national response to this crisis of inactivity and lack of sports access. 4/6
And it can’t be led by companies who are also profiting from the $19 billion industry.

It needs to be led by a consortium of @USOPC_CEO, sporting NGBs, governors, pediatricians, national youth sport federations, @NRPA, school districts.

& it needs to be seen as not just 5/6
an altruistic outreach issue but a social justice, health equity & even high performance issue. The downstream impact of constrained access to sport will produce harm in these areas.

I know @LA84Foundation, @AspenInstSports, @Laureus_USA are leading on this. What more can we do?
