Thread about some of the harmful stereotypes and tropes that affect black women in the media.
The fat black woman - This stereotype portrays black women as fat and usually incredibly insecure about their appearances. Notably, they are almost entirely surrounded by thin non-black women and are usually dark/brown. This is a deliberate action to make BW look undesirable.
BONUS: The psycho fat black woman!
tHE sISTA sOulJAH/race soldier- This trope exists to condition black girls and black women into fighting on the frontlines for the black community even though that should be the job of black men. It depicts black women with their natural hair associating blackness with struggle.
The angry/bitter black woman- The perpetually angry black woman who is usually angry because a black man hurt her. This trope works only to depict BW as inherently angry and spiteful people. https://twitter.com/rileywrittens/status/1303189061956505601?s=20
Subpar depictions of NH- When natural hair on black women is brought out of the closet and it isn't being used for race soldier shit. It is usually depicted as incredibly short or damaged. This perpetuates negative stereotypes about NH being unable to grow and hard to manage.
The strong/independent black woman- This trope perpetuates the idea that black women are inherently superhuman and meant to bear the weight of the world on their shoulders. It also furthers the idea that black women are "more masculine" than other races of women.
The interesting thing about all these tropes is although they were created by white people. You'll find loads of black people (black women included in that) perpetuating them in their own projects and defending them too.
