Let's talk about ending the filibuster, one of the keys to the Senate's dysfunction.
It doesn't ensure only centrist bills with broad-based support are passed. It ensures that centrist bills with broad based support never see the light of day.
It allows for a minority heckler's veto and ensures they can be bomb throwing ideologues from the cover of the filibuster. They would otherwise be forced to come to the table.
The filibuster was added to the Senate well after the Founding and was rarely used until the Civil Rights movement. It's not some cherished tradition outside of racist circles.
And I never hear anyone suggest the House should add it as a rule, only that the Senate should keep it? It's pure political gaming.
You don't want a bill to pass? Convince your fellow Congress members or control one of the House, Senate or Presidency. Otherwise you lose. That's how it should work.
