Honestly, do you know why @NYCSchools hasn’t been able to pull this off? They’re afraid to be *seen* as imperfect; they’re worried more about perception than reality, and so have prioritized PR/marketing over honesty.
Most educators I know are aware that there will inevitably be some cases of COVID that pop up. For the foreseeable future, it’s about risk management, because risk elimination isn’t realistic.
No one is asking @NYCSchools to do the impossible. We’re asking for them to be real with us and with our communities; we’re asking for a good faith effort, follow-through, and honest ownership of mistakes — with a commitment to revision and improvement.
We’re asking them to take care of the little things, to rebuild trust they lost in the spring. I’m more willing to support a school system that makes basics (mask-wearing, widespread regular testing, a transparent tracing process) non-negotiable than one investing in theatrics.
What we’re asking for is actually *easier* & *less expensive* than what they’re doing... and they still won’t do it. That’s why we’re scared: NYCDOE has chosen to waste time+money on image management, rather than putting in work to create an image that doesn’t need to be managed.
