Thread #10 - 1/n Raagam for the week: Charukesi – An extremely versatile raagam that can express a diverse range of emotions. While you will know every song in this thread, you may not have listened to quite a few in the recent past. Guess some will get added to your playlists :) https://twitter.com/rgchennai/status/1302247472996048897
/n Disclaimer :) Also, there’s a playlist with all songs in the last tweet of this thread. https://twitter.com/rgchennai/status/1281893304070582272?s=20
/n I usually start the thread with a carnatic song to set context, but thanks to Ilayaraja, we have this beautiful composition in Sri Raghavendrar.
/n For a change, starting with all retro songs, because a set of three songs will tell you the versatility of this raagam. MKT in Haridas warned us all way back in 1944 - Manmadha Leelaiyai Vendraarundo?
/n TMS and P. Susheela melt you in this haunting melody composed by K V Mahadevan!
/n The remix version was a hit yes, but have you listened to this exciting original, composed by G. Ramanathan, for the movie Sarangadhara?
/n Now that you have seen how expressive this raagam is, imagine what Ilayaraja can do with it! SPB

/n Yaay, a Deva song! I used to refer this as the ‘ஓடி புடிச்சு விளையாட்டு’ song as a kid, because it took a while for me to understand that the first two words were ‘எங்கெங்கே எங்கெங்கே’. Hariharan and Asha ji nail this one!
/n Including this Janaki Amma – SPB song for the Raja veriyans :) The charanams here may remind you of the charanams in Aadal Kalaye Dheivam Thandhadhu. Don't miss the quintessential SPB laugh at 5:25 :)
/n Excited to include this melodious Bharathwaj number in this thread! It has been years since I listened to this one – would be very interested to know if this is a regular on anyone’s playlist :)
/n Definitely the least popular of songs from the Singaravelan album, but a lot of times, it is the short ones that turn out to be musically rich! Thoodhu Selvadharadi!
/n Do you remember this movie's audio cassette had a contest to count the number of times the word ‘rasika’ appears in this song? Does anyone know the answer yet? :) SPB, Sujatha, ARR in a Charukesi 'based' song..
/n Most songs after 90s have used Charukesi to express yearning, and Hariharan & Sujatha are so good at expressing these deep emotions. Clearly, Deva isn’t credited enough for his melodies!
/n At the cost of repeating this a few 100 times, GVP, please come back to composing full time! Kudos to Sonu Nigam for such good pronunciation.
/n One of the things Harris Jeyaraj isn’t credited enough for, is the fact that, in most of his songs you can clearly hear the lyrics. Harish Raghavendra and Chinmayi are probably two voices I will never get tired of, listening to :)
/n Oh, I saved the best for last. I have no words to express the beauty and complexity of this song! Hariharan and Charukesi are a love story! Thanks to him, Sadhana Sargam and the Master ARR for this legendary piece of music filled with sangathis!
/n A few Charukesi songs that are not in the thread - Nalladhor Veenai Seidhen, Edho Edho Ondru Enakkulle Nuzhaindhu, Azhagiya Tamizh Magal Ival, Velli Malai Manava, Samsaaram Adhu Minsaaram, Mayanginen Solla Thayanginen.
/n Happy Weekend Folks! :) @SunOfGan @iShO_o @jiljilramamani @AynavaramGopal @Ajumplakdibampa @saitired @harinisorini @simplychoo @ssramkrishnan @ranjprakash @gcmouli @praveenkpm18 @nithyaaa88 @nushie7292 @Wowtruckle
/n @srividhyakk @meghakaveri – Here’s the Charukesi thread you both have been asking for :)
