I saw Toots play live twice. First at the Night Gallery, a grimey and magical club setting. He was grumpy and demanding and put on the best show I had ever seen. He held the mic down at his chest while singing.
Seeing them live showed me how the root of reggae is soul and it was vital and infectious. Then at the Brighton Dome a beautiful theatre in the UK With proper sound & lighting and a stage setup worthy of a star. He was the Jamaican James Brown. They tore the place down.
If any artist of the last 50 years should be a household name it’s Toots Hibbert. Go listen to his catalog. Watch his shows on YouTube. (1975 Winterland SF show) He embodied everything I love about music.

RIP TOOTS
