Omigosh! So in Feb I had a weird urge to go to the BL, order up the Health and Strength journal from 1911 and see if there was any more info about the jujitsu suffrage play “The Husband Tamer” as have had no joy finding any trace of it beyond the rehearsal photos in that journal.
There wasn’t any more info, but I took some clear pics of the rehearsal photos as it seemed a waste not to. Then in lockdown am contacted out of the blue by a German journalist working on a piece about performative violence in the suffrage movement...
and super keen to talk about Edith Garrud and the jujitsuffragettes, and by a French comic book publisher who is also wants to talk about Garrud and is looking for good images of those rehearsal photos from the 1911 journal as they can’t go to the BL because lockdown.
I send the images to the French comic book peeps, very glad to have taken the pics in Feb. And what comes through the door today unexpectedly? This gorgeous book! So chuffed to have a mention - and love the French action sounds too! 😍 Hurrah for random research urges 👍
In the book they go to see “The Husband Tamer” at the cinema, so those posed pics from 1911 are recreated as stills from the film. Clever stuff! Now to dust off my GCSE French and get reading 😃
