Here's the thing for me: when the FM started these briefings, there was no telling how awful this situation was going to get - there still isn't. But she decided it was her duty to get out there in front of people and tell them what was going on.
She left herself with no hiding place. She can't just abandon them when it's a tough day and it would suit her to hide in a fridge. She committed to reaching as many people as possible with as much information as possible.
So day after day we see her getting grilled by whoever in the media turns up with a question. Not two or three friendly journalists. We get the good guys and the wanks. And then we get to decide whether we believe her answers and trust her judgement.
When she said, on balance, she'd prefer to keep Catherine Calderwood in post, the media and I think the people disagreed. So they bowed to that, took the hit, and then just kept going. Because it's important.
We know it just kills some of her less worthy opponents to see this because they know that they neither would nor could have done it. But it really is about leadership in a crisis and who's big enough to provide it.
We should always be asking our government to be doing better, especially those of us who support it. But Christ almighty we need better quality opposition in this country. And a better media. Starting with you, BBC.
