It is not a coincidence that there is a substantial overlap between the ‘hang the rapists’ crowd and the anti Aurat March, anti feminist crowd. Both positions stem from the refusal to accept that violence against women is a systemic problem.
Patriarchy is a system in which all men and not just the most heinous and evil participate. The zeal for hanging rapists in the public square reflects the desire to cast such violence as a form of evil that comes from outside the moral universe the rest of us inhabit.
This is why there is such a firm refusal to accept that one's own father, uncle, brother, cousin, friend, or even favorite pop-star might be a harasser or a rapist when an accusation is made against them.
Hanging rapists then becomes the means to fortify patriarchy by casting such violence as an aberration rather than a norm. Sadly, such violence, even in its most heinous and extreme forms, is no aberration. #MotowayIncident
