This just objectively isn’t true. https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1304541291217387520
And he’s governor. He knows this.

California is an incredibly unique biome, given over to many different natural disasters, particularly sensitive to climate change, and incredibly poorly managed (for reasons green-leaning & otherwise).

Most states will never be what CA is now.
If he wanted to make the argument that the country should engineer our policies to the benefit of California (and the detriment of other places) that’s one thing.

But Nebraska will never be California. Ohio will never be California. His argument is moronic.
And boy if you think the Green New Deal is gonna fix this, I’ve got some bad news for you.
The reality is that Newsom won’t do the difficult things that would help people in CA right now for 3 easy reasons:

1) improving forest policy would piss off the enviros
2) improving land use policy would piss off the rich people &
3) there’s no fame or glory in doing either.
Also using climate change as a bit piece to virtue signal your way into political plaudits is a really shitty thing that Newsom and a lot of Dems do that shows that they aren’t remotely serious about addressing climate change.
When I find the will and energy to do it this’ll be a think piece.
The constraints to addressing climate change in California are no different than in West Virginia or any other place that Dems look down their noses at: a constellation of political and economic concerns prevent meaningful change.

CA’s just look a little different.
Instead of relying on coal to support families/communities, you have wealthy people who want to build homes in ecologically problematic areas. And you’ve got a bunch of pissed off 20 year olds who want you to leave forests alone because Mother Earth wants it or some bullshit.
But Newsom isn’t going to learn-to-code away the good guys. So nothing will get done.

Except Newsom can look like he cares and use it as a way to run for higher office because some 16 year old Swedish girl got mad at the UN.
Anyway, this is a long way of saying that it’s really, REALLY bad that environmental zealots (overcorrecting to generations of climate change denial) are calling the shots, and Californians are paying the price in both an unfortunate & largely predictable way.
It’s way, way easier to sell sexy ideas that may or may not even move the needle a little bit (and definitely won’t in the short term) like GND than it is to, say, actually log forests or clear underbrush or put phone and power lines underground.
And the people who sell things like the Green New Deal as a silver bullet fix are either a) mostly unaware b) politicos who want to control your life or c) kids who have been emotionally damaged by climate change hysteria.
The dirty little secret of climate policy is that real change will require a zillion small, local acts all around the world that don’t fit a partisan bent - from carbon capture to sea walls to not letting India/China emit unlimited CO2 - and no one is interested in all of them.
Also this video has more climate policy wisdom than any book you’ll ever read: https://twitter.com/balajis/status/1304639824289120256
