Poland’s position between Prussia & Russia in the 1760s, Catholic oppression of Protestants & Orthodox, & the Bar Confederation’s rebellion.
Many were worried by Russia’s influence in Poland. The Ottomans declared war to roll back the Russians, but suffered terrible defeats in 1769 & 1770 - losing Azov, Kerch, Moldavia, & most of Wallachia.
Russian navy sailed around Europe from St Petersburg to the eastern Mediterranean & destroyed the Ottoman navy in 1770. The Russian fleet tried to stir up a Greek rebellion, but hit by dysentery they returned home.
Russia’s successes led to Austrians preparing to intervene on behalf of the Ottomans, which would have brought Prussia to war against Austria. Rather than fight, they agreed to each take a part of Poland - Orthodox part for Russia, Protestant for Prussia, Catholic for Austria.
The First Partition of Poland in 1772. Prussia became geographically contiguous & cut Poland off from the sea (& customs revenue), Austria gained Galicia, & Russia gained parts of Belarus.
